I'm 90% sure it will not work without the boot disk. Nintendo has the startup disk for sale on thier website for $15.

just go to Nintendo online store/ Gamecube/ parts and accessories.

they also have shit loads of replacement parts for the gamecube as well.

Given the price of a complete one, I'd gladly shell out $15 for the disk

But they're right - you NEED that disk.

Agreed. I'm surprised at the prices these guys are going for. Both online and off.

Even if the cost of the Game Boy Player is somewhat prohibitive, keep in mind that you only need one of these to turn your Gamecube into a mini SNES...

    Well worth it IMO.

And it's THE ONLY way to really play fighting games on the GameCube. I was never able to make it through the Konquest mode of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance until I bought a pair of Hori pads.

Now I'm assuming that controller was never released here, I never saw one myself. Would a japanese GC controller work for an american console?

Same here. In fact, locally, we're lousy with 'em. All between $20 to $30.

I'd like to pick up some of them hori pads... or, I can always get a snes to gc converter. Using the snes pad with the GC/GBAplayer might not be optimal (no Z button). I guess it just comes down to whichever is less expensive.

Actually, it was released here, in very small quantities. The American one said Game Boy Player Controller on it.

But to answer your question, yes, controllers are universal.
