Default Colecovision Expansion Module #2 Repair Help

The steering on my Colecovision steering wheel is dead. I have tried fresh batteries in it, pulled it apart and blown it clean with both compressed air and electrical cleaner without any luck. The throttle works just fine. I see some companies are offering remanufactured items so a repair must exist out there, however researching the web has proved fruitless. Anyone here managed to fix one of these successfully? It looks like the steering input is optically encoded much like an old mouse with the slotted disc. I can do most basic step by step electronic repairs so any help or mod suggestions would be appreciated, otherwise I'm stuck driving using my roller controller....

Try replacing the offending optical sensor.

Probably be easier to pull one out of an old mouse and modify it.
I fix things. You name it, I'll work on it. Want something modded? Recapped?
