Is this safe? I have it hooked up and everything seems to be working smothly, minus the fact that games take 2 - 3 resets to start. However, once they've started, everything runs great. Any probles with doing this modification?

It sounds like the PSX can see the drive but you have to understand the models alternatively had better or worst drives for special purposes.
What I really want to do is program a bios that can see the ext port and have the GUI for playing music built in. The better cd drive is just a bonus.
True. I was just tired of the faulty default drive that was originally included. Something to do with it overheating and melting a plastic part just enough for the laser to misalign. Changed it to metal in later versions of the Playstaton. Other than that, I didn't see any major differences. Except for the length of cables.
With every PS revision, there have been minor firmaware and OS revisions as functionalities were fixed and or taken out. Your systems board might be having a hard time detecting a CD-Rom drive that it doesn't know what to do with it due to different drivers/manufacturers for them.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

my experience with psx systems is that you can swap any laser into any drive. If you want a good fix with an old look take a psone laser and put it into you 1001 system. the laser ribbons are the same length.
you can't just take the whole drive out and put it into a 1001 model because the top plastic piece of the laser drive has a different design than other lasers.
so anything you do just remove the laser and white gear arm and replace them as a set.
also you may want to clean the laser lense with a q-tip and alcohol and some canned air before you install it.
I just took it out of a 7501 and it was the same size/shape, it just had some extra plastic tabs that went into holes not found in the 1001. So I cut them off and it fits just great.
