Default Sega Mega Drive serial number question

I own a couple of Sega Mega Drive consoles and i'm wondering how the serial number on them works. One of them has a serial number something like "40e 13000" and another has something like "40f 38000". I assume that the 40e is an older console, but how far down does this serial number go? Does i.e 35a excist? And how high does the number goes before the letter changes, does i.e 40e 99999 excist?

I also have another console that has a full number, something like 12515162, no 40e or anything. I assume that this is a newer model since it doesnt have an EXT port on the back. What was this used for anyway? To connect Sega CD model 1?

Actually, the original Sega CD connects through the expansion port like the second model. The 9-pin EXT port was actually intended for an unreleased modem (although the modem was released in Japan and Brazil).

    *bump*

No one know this? I guess most people here own a Genesis and not a Mega Drive :\ Does the Genesis use the same serial system by the way?

I'm looking at a spare Mega Drive II serial number MK168605PAL and I'm trying to work out if it spors the DIN connector for A/V output since my TV doesn't have an analog RF tuner, (damn modern tvs) can anyone help me with this?

Pretty sure all MD2s can output to AV, considering stereo audio out via AV cables was bit of a selling point for it.

Might be best if someone else here clarifies, though.
