It may have been the original metroid, but if not, probably close to that time.

I was thinking Metroid as well but wikipedia only says "one of the first"...not that wikipedia holds the final say.

I read somewhere that it was both Kid Icarus and Metroid. They were released at about the same time, so finding out which one is officially the first could be difficult.

A google search on "first game to use a password" returns 2 results which both say Metroid. Although neither seem to give any references.

One is an article which is probally correct... link

The other has it in with trivia questions...but many of their answers are not correct.(It says the main characters name is "Shamus")

That's more or less true. They both used the same engine and I think had identical password systems. In this case it would probally come down to release date, of which I believe Metroid was first, but not by much.

Whoa, what about Pharaoh's Curse for the Atari 800? That's gotta have Metroid beat by a coupla years, easy.

Maybe I'm turning into a forum Nazi in my old age, but why do people use thread titles like 'Quick question' or 'Just curious' instead of something like "What was the first game to use a password?". Less vague is more better. I almost skipped over this topic because of that, but turns out it was, in fact, an interesting question.

Although I guess the thread could've been titled 'Do a quick google search for me please'. :P

Bomberman had passwords before Metroid, too.

Not nazi, just old. Your complaints are like my grandfather ones.

    Anyway, thanks for the answers.
