Default Question about saving system in Zelda II (NES)

Just wondering how it works. So, lets say you got to level 4 (exp), and then you are half way to level 5 (exp), and lose all your lives. It only saves from right where you got to level 4? I know I'm making it sound confusing, but any help is appericiated!

You lose all your experience points when you save a game or lose all your lives.

You can hold up and a on controller 2 while the game is paused. However, it still counts on
    your death total unfortunately.

Let this be a lesson to you Get to the next level before saving.

This is a valid excuse to continue playing when you are supposed to go to family events or when parents and/or significant others nag.

And here's something important, always try to wander through each palace and level up BEFORE you put the crystal in the statue. You don't want to waste that free level up at the end when you only need 200 more points, which you can easily get on your own. Sometimes I defeat a boss and go back through the palace to kill more monsters for XP. I've even left a palace without putting the crystal in the statue so I can reset all the Ironknuckles and stuff; Once I level up with them, and my next up is something astronomical like 8,000, I'll have a nice big 8,000 point bonus waiting for me at the end of the palace. (Boss already killed)
