Default Streets of Rage 2/Herzog Zwei Genesis Cart

I bought a Genesis from a used game store a few years ago and it came with a copy of Streets of Rage 2 (Not for resale version). When I put the game in and turned on the Genesis, the title screen for Herzog Zwei came up and needless to say I was confused as hell.

I finally got some gamebits the other day and opened up the cart just out of curiosity, maybe see if someone left an April Fool's note inside or something, but I don't really know what I was looking for. The screws were very stiff though, as if the cart hadn't been opened before.

Was this probably just some guy swapping out the boards or is there ever a legitimate way this could happen, like in the factory?

    Probably some dude board swapping.

Sucks for that person who bought "Herzog Zwei" and was greeted with the SOR2 screen.

I purchased a used copy of Scooby Doo N64 version one time from a Gamestop and it turned out to be Madden 64. I took it back and they exchanged it for a real copy of Scooby Doo(used). Had I've known that the real Scooby Doo had a black cart it would have been a dead give away, saving me a little grief and an extra trip. Someone had change out the labels. I guess Scooby was selling for a higher price than Madden at one point.

One time I purchased 'Ogre Battle 64' from Gamestop that had a little Family Video sticker on the bottom corner of the box, and when I took it home and booted it up, I saw an Electonic Arts logo on the screen, so I was like 'wtf'? Turns out, somebody rented the game and switched out the board for a 'WCW Nitro' board! Good thing that Gamestop had another 'Ogre Battle' cart laying around...

I have yet to acquire a game that's been the victim of board swapping, but a friend of mine has an Alpha Mission (NES) cart that boots up 1942.

When I was a kid, I rented Renegade for NES and it turned out someone had swapped the chip with Gradius.

I had the same experience when I bought a Metalstorm cart for the NES from Blockbuster Video... it contained SMB & Duck Hunt.

The trouble was, I had bought it in California and brought it home to Canada to play it on my NES, so a return would be impossible. Needless to say, I sold it at a pawn shop a week later...

Herzog Zwei when you were expecting SOR2 is a surprise, but certainly tolerable.

I bought a copy of Shining Force 2 once, and when I fired it up I got .... Street Smart

That was just downright evil. It's like Double Dragon, but with all the fun sucked out. Yes, that's right - it's WORSE than Double Dragon! The worst thing was, I had never played SF2 before, so for a few horrible moments, I found myself wondering if this was how it actually started. Then the title screen appeared, reality sank in.

Seller was good enough to give me a full refund though. Which meant I got a SF2 box and manual for free.

If any of you ever rented Killer Instinct for the SNES and found that it booted up to Lemmings, I can tell you who you should contact to get your $5 back...(and no, it's not me)

Happened to me many years ago.

In an old rental store I had purcahsed a cart only version of Phantasy Star. It had Hang On/Safari Hunt inside.

Typical. Had my money reimbursed though.

I knew a kid in school that used to do that to SMS games. He'd buy a new game like that (Phantasy Star was $80 back then!), swap the board with some crap (Hang On/Safari Hunt is the SMS equivalent to Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt) and finally bring it back to TRU and return it. It was the "manual" way to pirate software I suppose....haha. He used to peel labels off Amiga disks and stick them back on blanks...and return those as well. Corrupt freakin' kid. Oh well, I'm sure kids today are doing MUCH worse.

I see this very often, and it's usually a "rare" board in a very common cart, just like your scenario. I've seen a few inexplicable ones too. Recently we checked out an NES Renegade cart, it had plain 'ol Golf on it. Not sure why anyone would go through that sort of trouble to play NES Golf, but I guess every game has its fans.

I personally haven't seen this yet. But I have heard tale of someone seeing a misprinted disc, it was Final Fantasy Tactics but had Cabela's Hunting(one of the ps1 versions) disc art on it and was in that case.

Well, one can assume that the person returned/sold Renegade with the Golf board in it, and kept Golf with the renegade board for themselves. Just because YOU ended up with the one with the lesser game inside doesn't mean that was the one the swapper didn't intend to keep. It is, after all, many years since you could rent those 8 and 16bit titles. They had to stick the board in SOMETHING to put it in their NES.

I'm inclined to believe that the switch was made more recently, when the value of Herzog Zwei was greater than SOR2.
