Default SEGA Queen & the Mystery of Mew

    Hey Everyone,

I've got a Pokemon related mystery I'm trying to figure out.

In December 1999, Toy R Us and Nintendo Canada did a contest called "Gotta Catch Mew". The contest gave you a chance to get one of rare Mew characters for your Pokemon Red, Blue, or Yellow cart. Basically what you had to do was go to the electronics dept. of Toys R Us and get a card with Mew sticker on it. If it said "Caught Me" underneath the Mew sticker, that means you won!

I was lucky enough to win a Mew . However, 3 months later something very strange happened. One night when I tried to continue my Pokemon Yellow game, I got a message that said that my saved game data had been destroyed! Not corrupted, not deleted, DESTROYED! If course, this means that all my high-level Pokemon, including Mew, were gone.

To this day I have no idea why this happened. I never used any kind of cheat device with my game, and I've never been able to duplicate this error message. My theory is that the problem was caused by the Mew data itself. Can anyone here think of a plausible explanation as to why my game crashed?

(Oh yeah, In case your wondering what inspired my thread title, it's from the english title for the 8th Pokemon movie "Lucario and the Mystery of Mew".)

I would guess that Nintendo wrote into the code that the game would erase after a set period of time so that you couldn't pass it to all your friends. But that's only a guess.

data can get corrupted in many ways, the game could have been dropped it could have been near a strong magneticsource, it could even have been a glitch or even a faulty battery. sram is not a very secure way of saving data so many things can go wrong.

but it wasn't an evil conspiracy, just faulty technology.

That seems thoroughly unlikely, especially since it took three months. If that was really the case there would have been a horrible, contagious epidemic of Pokemon carts dying all across the nation!

There is of course a well-established way now for anyone to catch Mew without a cheat device or risking corruption of one's save data.

Huh? What method are you referring to?

You have to restart the game though.

Actually, there is another way to get a Mew, but it's only for Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, and it was intentional, unlike the aforementioned glitch.

You need to own My Pokémon Ranch. Upload 999 Pokémon, then the ranch proprietor, Hayley, will have a Mew. If you bring her an egg (doesn't matter what's in it), she will offer to trade her Mew for the egg. You can then withdraw the Pokémon for usage in your game.

As for the glitch above, I can certainly vouch that it works. I have one Mew from Pokémon Blue currently in Pokémon Silver.
