Trying to remember a game!...

I'm trying to remember a game I used to play years ago at a mate's house. All my memories of it are very vague but from what I can remember...

- It was 2D
- You fought against enemies/monsters of some sort
- At points in the levels/stages, innocent civilians would run past (you were saving them I think). You could attack/kill them, though you weren't supposed to. There may have been a penalty of some sorts if you did. I think they also screamed when you did.

I played it on his PC via emulation (naughty I know ), which means it would have been on Megadrive, Snes, Arcade or Neo Geo. I kept thinking it might have been Golden Axe or King of the Monsters but neither of them seem right, especially Golden Axe.

Sorry how it's all a bit vague. Any help given would be greatly appreciated!

Do you remember what kind of character you were playing as? That might help significantly.

Wonder if it was Sword of Sodan.

It's not King of the Monsters, either of them.

Unfortunately I really don't. My best guess would be a warrior of some sorts. :S
