Looks great. I've never heard of this game. Is it a Japanese release?

Yeah - hopefully they'll bring it to the US.

Aren't they slated to be budget 20-dollar (equivalent) titles as well? If so, and with a stateside release, that'd be pretty sweet. I want to see an updated Wonderboy III.

That's funny. After reading about the DP Fantasy Zone project I discovered that Fantasy Zone is a (mostly) side-scrolling shmup, so I was just cruising ebay for a copy for my Saturn. (Typical price range: $15-$30) And then you pop up with this!

Is this the "Sega Ages: Fantasy Zone" disc that I see listed at Gamefaqs, currently announced for PS2 in Japan with no release date? Or is it part of a compilation?

Sounds like it - it's something to the effect of "Sega Ages 3D" but most of the page is in Japanese, so I'm not 100 % sure. They also have some info on Phantasy Star Generation 1 there as well:
