Default XBox 360 E-81 error code?

I popped in my Modern Warfare 2 and got a message saying that I had to update the console to play the game so I did and got an "E-81 Failed Update" message.

I contacted Microsoft and tried everything they said, (unplugging the power, taking the memory card out, etc) and nothing worked, the screen is still displaying that message. It seems they want to charge me $100 to fix it, which I probably won't do since this console was a refurb from them, my original had the RROD last Sept.

Has the E-81 message happened to anyone else?

    From the Google:

"An error code reading "E81" might indicate a failed update. Turn off your XBox 360 console and turn it back on while holding down the sync button on the console. This should fix all failed update errors."

I have no idea if it will work but it's worth a shot. Another site said you can download any updates and put them on a USB stick and install them that way. That doesn't seem like an Xbox thing, but again, you might try it.

Technically, you could do the USB thing for an Xbox 360, but you need the latest update so it's a moot point.

You've been able to install console updates using USB sticks for years now, it has nothing to do with the recent USB --> memory card update they just put out.

If it still has RROD warranty, RROD your console so they can replace it.

A failed update...reminds me of a coworker who updated their PS3 when MW2 came out (it was being forced upon him, since his PS3 had old firmware), but did so via the internet method...and it got "bricked". Now everytime he turns on the console, it wants to continue, but fails halfway. I found no solution online, unfortunately.

Thanks for the responses, I tried the sync button thing and it didn't work.

Megasdkirby, how do you make the system RROD on purpose?

And shove your finger down your throat or something and vomit on it, and THEN mail it in to MS.

It's good to teach ol' Billy a lesson on how to make things that actually work.

Dunno on mine I got the two red rings, said I had three rings sent it in and they fixed it. People told me the 2 rings was the e74 issue which is covered so I may have been lucky.
