This site claims that the NES version is the best 8-bit version. Having played the C=64 version I find that hard to believe, but I'll give it a try.:-)

TROY'S GAMING HISTORY
1977- Atari 2600 (primitive)
1985- Commodore=128 (8-bit)
1989- Amiga 500 (16-bit)
1991- zzzzzzzzzzz :scatter:
2002- Playstation 2 (128-bit)
Hey, word of warning. Use the emulator FCE Ultra and turn PAL emulation on, otherwise it's not going to be playable at all. Unless you've got a cart and a PAL NES, in which case go nuts.
The original BBC version is the best, followed by NES. Frankly the C64 version is pretty crap in my eyes... vectors were never its thing...
The NES Elite looked (and sounded) terrible on Nesticle. The vectors didn't match up correctly.
I think I'll go download the new Windows version.

Nesticle? Someone's still using that old fossil...
Did you just completely ignore my post or something? Use FCE Ultra, not Nesticle. The game requires proper PAL timing, which only FCE Ultra does.
Yes, but I'm using the NTSC version (never released but on the net).

I still prefer Sega Master System as the best 8 bit system. It does have more color, better resolution and better sound than NES and even C64. It just didn't have many games.
Gamewise, I'd go with C64. It probably has ten times as many games as there are for all NES games worldwide.
Trust me, the "NTSC Version" is bullshit. They didn't do it right, and it will not work without proper PAL timing. Here's the address for FCE Ultra. Believe me, this is the only way to play the game properly without a PAL NES, cart, and PAL television:

I will go download the PAL version and try the Ultra emulator.
