Default The most hated titles that you enjoy

When we talk about games with a love/hate relationship among players, titles like Earthworm Jim, Boogerman and Bubsy are bound to come up. You have a cult-following of sorts with these titles- a dedicated fanbase of players whom pray for the triumphant return of these franchises to the modern consoles. Then, there are critics and basic haters who slam the game whenever given the chance.

Today, I want to discuss games that receive only pure hatred among the general populace. Games that NOBODY in the entire universe, set aside maybe 5-10 persons, actually enjoy to an extent.

For me, the only game that's coming to my mind is Widget for the NES. It's branded as a terrible game, especially by the once popular Armake21/Nicotine Alien and of course his silly little followers who don't even give the games reviewed a chance. It's been considered cheap, difficult and to have grating music. I say "How can anybody think like that?". Indeed, it's got its problems- and it does feel a bit dated for the NES, but it's not bad either. Atlus was inspired in the process of making the game- they knew what direction they wanted to go with the game. They chose the route of a Megaman/Metroid hybrid, and added the main character (from the original show)'s unique power to transform. To add a bit more depth, you can even upgrade the weaponry and magic power (for transformations) for a less rigorous task. My only aggravation is that the transformations are underutilized. You will only ever need these powers for a few spots, and in some cases not at all if you're not shooting for the upgrades. In any case, it should be nowhere near the worst of the NES. I'd place it a little bit higher than an average NES game, since it is a fun little experience but also is ridden with a handful of shortcomings.

I remember renting that one back in the times you could actually rent N64 titles. Of course, that was years ago- but I did like it as a kid. I remember there being the premise of rescuing a princess- which felt overly familiar but the actual game itself was enjoyable.

I always like Astyanax on the NES. Especially because back then the cut scenes were way ahead of their time. I thought the cut scenes were better than Ninja Gaiden's even. Now it seems that no one talks anything but crap for the game, but I like the large colorful graphics, decent music, and awesome story.

Another one that I enjoyed that a lot of people just despise is Sewar Shark for the Sega CD. I don't know why, but I just love the corny FMV and Solar City sounds like a fun place to be.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Subzero for PSOne and Chaos in the Windy City for SNES. Once you get past the controls in Subzero I feel that it's a really great game and Chaos in the Windy City is just so ridiculous I love every minute of it.

Aren't you like 14? lol....

I liked a couple of nominations in this thread already, MK Mythologies and WWF Raw.

I also liked Trog! on NES, but that game didn't get a lot of love. Awesome powerups and exciting gameplay.

The RPG Beyond The Beyond for the PSone. I think it's a great old school RPG.

Virtual Bart on the Genesis... sure it has a couple of control snags here and there, but all in all, I thought it was a collection of some entertaining mini-games, and the cut-scenes did a great job at representing the Simpsons universe in they heyday of season 5 and 6 (what many would say the show's best years, but that's another topic entirely).
Bart's Nightmare I still fire up on occasion too, but some of the stages are way too difficult to enjoy the same way (Indiana Bart and Bartzilla, anyone?).

I loved Bart's Nightmare. When that came out I played it on the SNES and I swear it was probably one of the most colorful games in existence at the time. Not only that but I thought the special effects were pretty good. Yeah it did have it's quirks though, that's for sure.

Yeah I think I am guilty of that too, I like Hard Drivin' and Race Drivin' and a lot of people don't like those games because they didn't age well.

Hard Drivin' was cool - but I got spoiled playing in the arcade. maybe if I had a wheel and pedals I could get down on Genesis - lol Hard Drivin is how I learned to drive stick! too sweet

I already like a few of the games in here. Bomberman Hero, Trog!, hell, I still play Bart's Nightmare sometimes. You're right, though; Indiana Bart is way too hard.

Another great game that I never hear about is Thrilla's Surfari. Beat the hell out of T&C Surf Designs.

I played it back in 1996 and didn't enjoy it. However, I would definitely buy it if it appeared in the PSN Store. It deserves another look since it was the first traditional JRPG on the PSX. Maybe I'll find it used somewhere.

Old guy checking in - Human Cannonball for the 2600. It was one of the games we got with the system for Christmas in 1980, and my sister and I played the hell out of it then. I try to pick it up whenever I see it because I feel bad for it.

I used to rent it all the time as a kid, it used to be my favorite game. And now that I think about it, the game is really hard

Eliminator for PSX. It's not hated so much as downright obscure, but the few reviews I've seen of it have all been mediocre to negative.
