They have no markings on them and have a genesis connector on the cord. Anyone have any idea what they were from?

I believe those are from one of those Power-Joy type Famiclones.

How is the build quality? If you threw an adapter/cord on there, would it work with a regular NES? Would be a neat thing to 'wow' my non-collector friends with, even if it's not the best peripheral.

Many of the nes/famiclones use similar guns:

Eh, they're useful if you pick up a clone NES on its own. There's a good chance it'll work.

Truth be told, I have no idea. However, I don't think it's impossible to do.

They seem really, REALLY cheap. They weigh nothing and feel hollow.

I wonder how well these lightguns work at the best of times. When I was in Southeast Asia recently I picked up a famiclone but passed on the console bundled with a lightgun as the cord for the gun seemed quite stupidly short. Pair that with a short reach power supply and a/v cables that offer a stretch of maybe four feet from the power outlet to the TV and I see these being pretty frustrating accessories. Worth a shot on an NES if you have the proper adapter, though.

    This is normal. Sorta.

Japanese homes (apartments and the like) are usually very small so they don't include long cables. I recall the Famicom had built-in short controller cords, for instance.

Certainly true enough for the Famicom and space conscious Japanese homes, but in this case, I think the silly short cables have more to do with a cost-cutting measure than anything. These flimsy famiclone accessories are of a dollar store electronics calibur of build quality.

I bought one of these "super joys" in the box at my goodwill for 3.99, it has yet to bring me super joy.

Hmm..could be a good project. I wish I didn't have so many projects already. I like the casing, could probably fix it up a bit.

And we're talking about an item of Chinese origin... and I suppose they have the same space issues. If not moreso.

You could put some weights in then. That's a pretty common thing to do to make something not feel so cheap.
