Lightbulb Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) pulled from Virtual Console [Joystiq]

You waited too long. It was only a couple bucks, but you thought, "I have time. It'll always be there. I'll get to it eventually." But now you can't download Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the Virtual Console and your world is destroyed.

Honestly, it was a weird goal to have, but we didn't want to say anything. In each and every region, it seems the turtles have retreated from the Virtual Console. Nintendo World Report reports Konami cited an "expired license," the same issue that claimed TMNT Turtles in Time Re-Shelled.

There's no word on whether the turtles will return to the surface any time soon, so we've contacted Konami for more.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) pulled from Virtual Console originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Feb 2012 11:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

    That blows.

Then again, that's one of the reasons I like to have the original game. I can play it whenever I want.

Thus showing one of the advantages of physical media over digital distribution: Once a cartridge is printed, it exists pretty much for good. Something that's all-digital can easily be lost.

Just wait until the only way to play games is via streaming services like OnLive. License expires? Bye bye games you dig.

Which is when I will stop buying new games. I will not pay to simply borrow things. That's what rental services are for.

Yep. If I'm footing the bill, I'm the only one who gets to tell me when to not play it.

And I realize people that already bought TMNT don't have it magically removed from their Wii, but suppose they delete it needing room for something and then want to play it again later, not knowing it's been pulled? Yeah, that's why I say f the digital distribution.

The game is still there for those that need to redownload it through their download history. It's just disappeared from being available to purchase by removing it from the storefront (As have several other games over the years like the SMS version of Gradius and NES Ghost 'n Goblins when the arcade version was released).

I will gladly sacrifice the availability of TMNT on NES if it means Re-Shelled is killed. What an insult to fans that wretched turd of a remake was.

Well stated. While I do purchase DLC games from XBL I only get them during a sale(anything less than $10). But if the industry moved entirely to digital and new games still cost $60 to download then I'd just play all my old games and would forget about that gen.

As for TMNT, I have the original so it's no big deal to me but that scenario thats in the OP happened to me with Double Dragon. For some reason I kept putting it off and when it went away there was no warning. So now all I have is the demo. And even though when something like this happens to a game you already own, you can usually still download it if you previously deleted it for space. However, that will only last for as long as the servers are up. If they shut down completely(like the original XBL ones did in 2010) you can no longer download your previous purchases.

Hmm, it's not really that big of a deal. The game was only available for two days. They probably uploaded it and got a request to take it down right away.

TMNT has been on the Virtual Console for years and we haven't even gotten any Virtual Console releases since last summer. Wasn't there for 2 days by mistake only to get pulled. Their license ran out so they had to remove it after being available for years.

    I actually liked it.

Anyway, it got pulled? So what about those who already purchased it? Can they still download it?

No worries on the Virtual Console versions, though. There is always Homebrew Channel for that.

Yes, re-downloads are fine and it is still available in purchase history or whatever the equivalent is for VC purchases.

I don't think this is a big deal since it'll probably be available again someday. Virtual Console on the WiiU is supposed to have downloadable Gamecube games, but I imagine they will also bring out additional NES titles, including those that have disappeared.

I guess the article said the wrong date.

I liked that version but then again I've never played the original to compare it with. I did play and enjoy TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist on the Genesis but was always told they weren't the same game, just ones with similiar themes.

I thought the first TMNT NES game was pretty lousy, the later beat-em-ups were much better.

They based Re-Shelled direct on the arcade game, as with the first TMNT XBLA. All those extra levels and new bosses console players had always known for years were gone.

Re-Shelled is awful even in comparison to the arcade original. The lack of the content from the console versions is the least of its problems.

Well in a way I suppose. You know a game is broken when boring is the first flaw that comes to mind. Not being much fun is worse in the video game context than having specific nameable problems!
