Tom & Jerry NES/SNES/GEN

Ok, so my son and I are watchin Tom and Jerry on Boomerang. He says, "Daddy, I wanna play that Tom and Jerry game." I'll soon fire up eBay to buy a Tom and Jerry game for 1 of the above systems. Which one will my 5 year old enjoy? An enjoyable Tom and Jerry old school game that's not too terribly hard or sucky? Which one should I choose?

Hmm. Ok, now Yogi Bear. Available on the SNES. Would it be fun for a 5 y/o? What are the flaws?

Tom and Jerry is a very mediocre platforming game on the SNES (though certainly not unplayable). I would recommend the Mario games over it.

I would not buy the Yogi game on SNES. My son is 7 and is very good at games and he got burnt out quick on Yogi. It was poorly desigined and very difficult. Some of the jumps were almost impossible. He did pass a few levels on Yogi, but never went back to it.

Judging from what I saw on youtube, the NES version looks the most playable, which isn't saying much since all 3 games look like crap.

He'll forget about his random request well before it arrives. Just wait until he requests something with a good game adaptation, or pick him up all the Capcom/Disney NES games.

The SNES Tom & Jerry sucks, but I can't comment on the others.

If you really want to go after cartoon-licensed games of that era, why not just go with Capcom's Disney games? Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Magical Quest, etc. Or if you want Hanna-Barbera, go with the Taito games like The Jetsons and The Flintstones.

I know this is almost no help, but the Gamefaqs reviews rate the two Game Boy (original), Master System/Game Gear and the NES game the highest. The Genesis game only has one review but it rated an 8 (but judging by the review text, it almost sounds like the game bears very little resemblance to the cartoon).

I personally haven't played a single one of these games. There's also T&J titles on the Gamecube/PS2/Xbox, Playstation, N64, DS, GBC and GBA.

I've played all 3. The NES game is the best game out of the lot. It's somewhat harder than other similar games, but it didn't stop me from playing it when I was younger. Heck. It's still fun to play(at least to me) to this day. I'd go with the NES version if he wants Tom & Jerry.

The NES version also has a soundtrack that resembles Scott Bradley's original Tom and Jerry scores.

I will agree that the NES version is the best. Besides, isn't it more fun to beat up on Tom than just chase Jerry around? The levels are pretty cool how they vary too.

I only played the Tom & Jerry SNES game. I probably played it when I was 10, and I recall finding it enjoyable but not great.

As to Yogi Bear, I tested it out on an emulator to see if it is worth playing (and thus worth buying).
Frustrated me after only a few minutes. He was so hard to control. He moved so fast and the camera wouldn't give you enough room to see where you're going.
It is only recommended buying it if you're someone who gets a thrill from intentionally playing bad games. :P

I'd actually recommend the original Game Boy Yogi over the SNES. The GB game was about as generic of a platformer you could get, but at least it was playable.

First of all, the intro screen is absolute nightmare fuel with a huge zoom in on Yogi's face saying "here comes YOGI!" Terrifying.

Oh, and it's the very definition of average. Playable but...meh. You just collect clocks and jump on picnic baskets.
