Default What will be the next big game genre?

I don't know if there is already a thread like this, but if there is go ahead and lock it up.

In the music industry there are spans of time where a particular genre of music is the dominant genre, such as disco in the 70's and grunge in the 90's. These "fads" tend to last roughly 10 years before another genre comes to take its place.

What I'm wondering is what will be the next big genre to come up in gaming? Currently we seem to be in the first person shooter fad, and we have been in it for a while now, is it coming to an end soon? is there even any genre that seems ready to become the next big thing?

    Wondering what you all think.

I thought we were in the midst of a casual game fad.

Partying and raves- perfect for those nights where your friend slips multiple drugs into your water bottle and you have a Kinect to annoy the people in the apartment below with, not to mention the frightening photos that were autouploaded online that you'll have to spend four days explaining.

Either that or 3DS porn sims.

The next big thing is going to be games that use your social networking skills to advance. They'll turn your normal interactions into achievement-worthy gameplay.

Think about what people like and what makes them happy. Make a game about that, and they'll play it. Artificial accomplishment goes a long way.

Yeah I agree with the above poster. The casual trend will continue and on top of it will be the aforementioned achievements and social networking drivel.

When did games stop being about fun?

Is it just me or do people seem like there over the whole 3d thing before it really even started?

I want more games like Alan Wake and Heavy Rain that seem to be a very cinematic way of presenting video games.

Microtransaction-laden, uber casual smartphone-based games? That what Konami seems to believe will be the next big thing, apparently.

Ever try Remember Me? It looks great, has a cool plot, but is about as free-roaming as Sega CD-era FMV games.
