Arrow Technical Knowedge Base (Wiki) Sign-Ups Now Available

The Digital Press Video Game Technical Knowledge Base (the new wiki) is up and running with open registration at the moment. I kindly request that you please register your account now - preferably with your username from the forum - because after the next day or so we'll be closing the public registration and making registrations an on-request only thing that will need to be approved first by an existing wiki editor.

Right now the wiki is bare except for a long list of game consoles. Let's fill our wiki up with tech specs, how-tos, and repair guides of all kinds. Please feel free to take knowledge from this forum and other sources when writing your pages, but if needed please do get permission first. And remember, you can upload photos to help illustrate the repair processes and even embed YouTube videos.

Edit: Sign-ups are now per individual request to combat the spammers. We want your wiki contributions! Please reply to this thread or PM me to get yourself added to our list of Technical Knowledge Base editors. There you can add all the repair steps and console improvement information you can.

It should be, but we need to reinstall the phpMyFAQ software to find out for sure.

Although I don't really have much of anything to contribute now, hardware (especially 80s and 90s electronics) has always interested me. With a Wiki I might be more inclined to dig into this stuff.

    Thanks.

Signed up! Although I might not frequently contribute, I'll add what I can with my spare time. I hope the site does well.

Does this Wiki cover areas such as "getting old computer games to run"? If so, I might be able to help out a little bit.

How about Japanese systems? Say....Famicom/Disk System/Sharp Twin Famicom? I'd be able to help out with that one maybe.

Same rules as the forums, and according to the Forum FAQ:

Threads discussing the location or acquiring of ROMs and/or illegal (pirated) software will be locked per the discretion of a forum moderator or administrator. To avoid legal issues, "gray area" threads dealing with emulation may also be locked. As companies continue to release retro games through virtual releases or retro gaming packs for modern gaming systems, the threat of getting a cease-and-desist order grows. In order to preserve the gaming community we've all worked so hard to build, we ask that you respect Digital Press and refrain from the discussion of illegal ROMs.

Yes, absolutely. Please create an article for each one and then link to them from a list.

    Yes, that would be great.

Remember, this wiki is what we make of it. So please add to it what you think others would find valuable in the restoration of their games and hardware.

I signed up just in case I can't get to sleep at 3am and want something more productive than playing Price is Right on Facebook.

I signed up. Might not ever contribute anything, but there's always a chance.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

Arcade and pinball and home releases - all gaming of the mechanical and electrical kind.

Thanks Sean. Hopefully you can export the data from the original mySQL database. There was lots of good stuff there. LOTS.

Well the sad news is that while I was able to find the name of the old software, and even the exact version of the software that the TKB used to use, and successfully got it installed, it won't work because the server's software is too new for it to run properly! PHP has changed quite a bit in the last six years and version 1.5.4 of phpMyFAQ isn't compatible with the version of PHP running on our current server.

The good news is that Jibbajaba of the forum had copied down all that TKB info before the service was taken offline. So courtesy of Jibbajaba we'll be able to restore the knowledge to the DP Web site via the new wikified Technical Knowledge Base.

    Default Technical Knowledge Base Sign-ups

Sign-ups for the Technical Knowledge Base are now invite-only due to the rampant spam accounts and posts that were being created over there - I had to clean up a few hundred of them. So if you or someone you know wishes to have an account, please post here and request an account.

Today I edited the TKB to link to the DP home page and this restoration forum. Hopefully that will get more "link mojo" going, helping people get from here to there and vice versa.
