Those days are over. All kids play is call of duty and an M rated game would never get a big event like that when kids are playing it.
There was the Evo 2011 competition not too long ago.
Advent Rising was going to give away a million dollars in a competition, but it got cancelled.
The real reason it was cancelled is they didn't want to pay out a million dollars, I'm sure. Has anyone else noticed that the contests with a ridiculous unbelievable prize always tends to get cancelled?
Anyways, to get back on topic, the most recent that I've seen is on Gran Turismo 5. There have been multiple contests. From multiple contests to win a Logitech racing wheel(I'm assuming it's the Driving Force GT,) winning a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, to the opportunity to become a race car driver.

There are still tons of gaming competitions for specific games (Evo or fighting games, MLG for Halo+other computer games etc.).
How exactly do you mean?
There are pretty stringent laws against that kind of thing. Consider what happened with the Push, Nevada TV series.
One thing that comes to mind is Blue Ice, a PC adventure game that was going to have a contest associated with it before said contest was cancelled. Apparently their plan to get around the hacking issue was to have people write in with an explanation of how the solution was derived, though it would have helped that the contest answer was buried so hopelessly deep beneath so many layers that the full solution was only derived years later with the help of one of the developers.

One every year! Along with Seasons Beatings, Final Round, and so on. Valve just threw a DOTA 2 tournament with one million Euros as the grand prize. MLG is in full swing, Starcraft 2 supports full time professional players, I could go on.
If you're talking about a Willy Wonka style "non-pro" competition, most of that stuff is run on Facebook and game-specific websites now. It's cheaper.
god that was the coolest thing i have ever read about. was like why can't they do that these days?
I did do a thread earlier this year asking if anyone does pro level comps/tournaments for prizes
You got the traditional cash money prizes you get from stuff like MLG or PGL or Quakecon does a series of tournaments every year.
Don't know about today but i remember back in the day they would give cool stuff like cars
(back in the days of quake and quake 2 i remember one of the top ranking players won a brand new corvette at a comp. and Fata1ity (or whatever his name was) got like a BMW or something like that out of a comp)
Oh, yes, actually I got a pretty nice prize in a rather obscure little contest for Gish a few months ago. I would have publicized it more, but it was an f'in hard challenge.

Madden has an annual $50,000 tournament every year which might be $100,000 now. There was also the Pac-Man championship edition on XBL where you could compete on Live to go to the World Championship for it.
