One of my subscribers is having an issue with the Sega CDX where the motor spins the opposite direction before it rights yourself. Even then, it's hit or miss when it comes to actually reading the disc. Could that be tied to a power supply issue, like using the wrong AC adapter?
You could tell them to try batters and a music CD then it wont matter if it's the wrong PCU and if the "hit or miss" keeps up then it's more than likely the laser going out of if it works every time then check the PCU.

After tinkering with my CDX some more it stopped spinning up the disc so I think the laser was on it's last leg and could see the CD but once it started to spin it would lose the track and try to move in to find it again thus grinding the gears. I ordered some new lasers I hope there here tomorrow.

I find it amusing you assume it was on its last leg when "tinkering" proceeded its final death. To be fair I tell myself that every time I kill something...
I fix things. You name it, I'll work on it. Want something modded? Recapped?

That laser had to be close to death but yea it was more than likely me that did it in.
