Default Coleco Perma Power Help Please!

Went to plug the ac adapter into the "C" cell with the plug and the plastic inside that holds the two terminals in place crumbled apart and seems to have shorted it out. Got the thing hooked up and reads votls in but measure on the cell outer terminals reads zero. Upon taking it apart, one terminal looks to have what looks like a diode and a round grey thing soldered from one side to the other, measured both sides still zero volts. My question is does anyone know what the components are, the value of them? Can't read anything on them. Hope someone can please help, tried search everywhere with no luck. Will try to pos a pic later, thanks.

Took a picture, sorry old camera. Can't make out any of the writing on components. The grey ball component looks a little brown on one end.

Beyond the diode, metal and what looks like a large solder blob I don't see anything that resembles a transformer.

Does anyone know what the grey component(forgot what they are called) is or any values? Has anyone every had to repair one of these? I'll try to remove and see if there's any thing on them. I can't find anything and don't know how to figure out, thanks.

The diode is simply a reverse voltage protection circuit. Technically, you should just be able to clip the diode off and make sure you NEVER apply reverse voltage and it should work as expected. It could just be a standard typical diode but it could also be a zener. Can you read any writing on it at all?

I thought that was just a solder blob at first but it appears to have a lead wrapped around and soldered to the diode lead. There are a few possibilities of what it could be but it's really hard to tell from the picture. Where is the positive voltage that is being delivered to the end of the "C battery" coming from? The square tab, or the diode lead(side with silver line)? Can you read continuity between the positive C battery tab and that point?

I have seen parts like that grey thing before, but I can't remember exactly what they are. My first instinct was to say a tantalum cap, but I'm not sure that's correct. I'll try to dig out my Perma Power cells and identify it.

Since all these things do is adapt a 6V DC wall transformer to 4 phony C cells, I can't imagine what else you'd need other than a protection diode and a little filter cap.

A decoupling capacitor would fit the bill as appropriate for such a setup, but I don't usually see any that look like solder blobs.

I'm talking about the grey christmas ornament-looking thing covering the righthand battery terminal snap rivet. Has two metal caps on the ends.

    Ok, here's what's in mine:

Referencing your pic, the left side diode is an ITT ZY6.2, which is a 6.2V zener power diode.

The right part seems to be a plan power diode, like a 1n4005 or something similar. The one in yours is just a different package, like these:

Now I remember where I'd seen that part before - old British automotive electronics.

The "blob" is where the cathode ends are twisted & soldered together.

Edit: The Vectrex uses that style of diode as well.

Thank you very much and all for the help. Hope I can get working again. Will post results when I get parts, not sure where, and done.
