Default What music do you listen to while you game?

For me it's either Techno music, Dubstep, Metal, or Rock.
    Recently my playlist was this:
    War Pigs - Black Sabbath
    Jordan - Buckethead
    Ghosts N Stuff - Deadmau5
    Moar Ghosts N Stuff - Deadmau5
2011 Dubstep Mix - Various artists
Escape the Fate - all songs I have by them
and a bunch of other songs mostly the genres I listed above.

So what music do you listen to (if any) while you game?

I always listen to the video game's music that I'm playing. For me, it's too much of a part of the experience of the game to replace, and losing the sound effects greatly handicaps my playing as well, since it "takes me out of the game." I will, however, listen to the in-game '80s mix on my PS2's Activision Anthology.

When playing Black Ops, I play these albums:

Folsom Prison and Other Johnny Cash Songs by Dick Nolan
Saturday Night Fever by Bee Gees

This was mostly to try out my new records though. I barely play music with games now.

    This is why I turn off the music but keep on the sound effects, in games with the option, then try to match the volume of my music with the volume of the sound effects. Games with good music I keep on, but some games have horrendous soundtracks that I feel acceptable to drown out with music. Sometimes I even listen to other video game's music tracks while playing a game with a bad track (I mute the bad track) . One of my favorite soundtracks is the F-Zero X soundtrack. Also I listen to FamilyJules7x, an artist on Youtube who does rockin' covers of video game soundtracks... Here's one of my favorites;

I don't know if I'm the only person who does this (well my friends do too) but I don't know, it just can completely alter the atmosphere and mood to get me in a hardcore mood or a relaxed mood... Anyone who hasn't tried it should Oh, and check out the video I posted above of FamilyJules7x... man that's one goooood Pokemon remix

I can only play Sonic 2 while listening to Dr. Demento since that's how I always played it as a kid, most everything else I listen to the actual soundtrack.

I only listen to the in-game score. As stated before, it's part of the experience.

Like was already stated, I also only listen to the games original soundtrack. Even if the game has bad or no music.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

I listen to the music, if there is any, of the game itself.

The only exceptions are games that utilize licensed music. Then, I'll turn the music volume off in a options menu or if it's on a more modern platform that supports the feature, I'll listen to my MP3 library.

For modern racing games (Videogame music is all but extinct in that genre these days, it's dominated by licensed music), I have a collection of music from things like Top Gear on the Super Nintendo and a wide variety of Sega arcade racers that I'll often pull up. Or I'll listen to regular music (Which for me mostly means music from the 1960's like The Beach Boys). That's also what I'll play when playing a GTA game when possible (Or I'll just turn the radio station off if I can't play MP3's).

I'm another one of these. I can't divorce the music from the game, no matter how hard I try.

I listen to the music that the game came with. Hearing Mario, Sonic, Zelda or any game music takes me right back in time when I first played them.

Usually I only listen to music when playing on World of Warcraft, and usually its epic Metal, like Nightwish, Battlelore, Crimfall, Wintersung, Alestorm, etc...

Back in 1993-1994 or thereabouts I'd turn the game sound off and listen to Primus while I raised levels in Breath of Fire II and Final Fantasy III. Today whenever I hear Tales from the Punchbowl and Sailing the Seas of Cheese I still get a little hit of SNES RPG nostalgia.

I don't imagine that too many people listen to external music unless they're slogging through the boring parts of a long game, and I don't have the patience/attention span for things like RPGs anymore so I never listen to external music while gaming.

Unless I'm playing a golf game, I'm playing a game with its music.

I always listen to the in game music unless it's an XBOX game that allows for custom soundtracks, and the one I'd ALWAYS play with a custom soundtrack turned on was my most played XBOX game, Fuzion Frenzy.

The wife and I played the HELL out of this game, man, and we'd always use the Dance Dance Revolution 4th Mix soundtrack. It was PERFECT for Fuzion Frenzy, because all of the sounds were about a minute and a half, just like minigames, and it felt like they were made for the game.

When you play a game enough, the soundtrack can get annoying. I've developed a few very strong game and album associations, but only after I'd grown tired of the original music.

Final Fantasy VIII - Depeche Mode's "Black Celebration"
Phantasy Star Online - Depeche Mode's "Violator"
Pokemon Fire Red - "We Will Follow: A Tribute to U2"
Counter-Strike Source - Coheed & Cambria's "Second Stage Turbine Blade"
Final Fantasy XI - The Works of Star Salzman

Most of these have pretty repetitive soundtracks or, in the case of CSS, no soudtrack at all.

Man I can't tell you how many hours my brother, my friends, and I spent on that game.. It's so fun!
