Default How does vgchartz track games?

I went on the 3DS charts and found a bunch of games that have never seen the light of day to my knowledge - yet vgchartz lists some strange week-by-week numbers...

Here's one for the oft-delayed and now seemingly cancelled Balloon Pop 2. Apparently it's moved over 8,000 units yet if you look anywhere for a copy, good luck.

Another canceled/delayed/up-in-the-air game is Outdoors Unleashed: Africa, yet somehow it's moved nearly 7,000 copies

There are a handful of games like these that if they actually hit any sort of retail, one would think they'd be showing up on ebay or amazon "in hand". In fact, these sales numbers put it next to some of the lowest sellers on the 3DS (namely stuff that's actually been released, like Nikoli's Pencil Puzzle or F1 2011).

Now, RE: Revelations is a more recent game and tracked fairly accurately by the looks of it, starting with the actual release date of the game (seemingly not counting pre-orders)

So what gives? This has always frustrated me about vgchartz. It's hard to believe them when they are quoting game sales for games that haven't seen the light of day (and in some cases have entirely lost their placeholder on many retail websites). Unless we really do have these game circulating behind our backs at Family Dollar or Cabela's or something...but I somehow doubt it...

It's based on what companies report to them. Problem is that not all companies report their numbers. There could be some standing order for Balloon Pop 2 from some smaller place that they thought was going to hit for this quarter and reported it (though it's been pushed back something like 9 months now).
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

I can certainly see how there reporting is far from infallible, especially if you were relying on smaller retailers to estimate sales. If I was in the business of tracking sales, I'd probably be making sure the game actually got released in the first place... couldn't be that hard to actually followup on each weekly schedule releases to make sure they each hit the target date...
