Default Top Down vs. Side Scrolling vs. Isometric

Three different styles go in, only one will come out. Or something like that. What's your fave?

Thats easy....top down all the way. Though there was one on the PSX that I have (cant remember name now) that had them all in different levels of the game. That was pretty fun. I think it came in a long box too...NAME THIS GAME!!

Side scrollers for me. They offer SHMUPS players to go inside structures like caves and underground bases. Nothing against overhead shooters, but side scrollers offer more in terms of gameplay.

    Philosoma.

Underrated and pretty cool for the way it used so many different angles. (Except I always hated the "from the back" parts because I'd always power up my forward weapons and not have more than a pea shooter in that part!)

I had to vote for top down, since Mars Matrix alone has probably eclipsed all my other SMHUP playing time as of late. Between that and Xevious, it's just gotta be.

On the other hand, Life Force, Gradius and Fantasy Zone probably combine for a very close second place in the Side scrolling camp.

Hack your controller, flip your TV on its side, and voila! Vertically scrolling Gradius! Although I can't come up with a reasonable explanation for the bomb that then gets pulled to the right.

It seems that the vertically scrolling genre has seen more releases overall, and has become more technically sophisticated, with wacky chain scoring systems and crazy bullet spray patterns that I just don't see in the side-scrollers. But maybe I'm just not playing the right side-scrollers.

    And do get Radiant Silvergun.

Well Gaiares is horizontal shooter. And this is my all time favorite so I vote for sidescrollers. And it's not only Gaiares though, I also think sidescrollers are more strategy oriented than vertical shmups. Although vertical shooters tend to be much more intensive wich is a big plus IMO. Love both... Isometric ones I can live without.
