    Default Really Yellow SNES

That is one of the nastiest looking SNES I have ever seen.

Has there ever been a reason discovered for why they do that??

Early runs of the SNES had cheap plastic that degraded into that icky icky cornbread color.

I can speak from personal experience that is the truth.

Got mine in Dec 91 -- last I saw it, last year, it was yellow over most of the surface and the corners were cracked.

    Still works, just looks bad.

Well I can rule out the sunlight theory. Mine was down the basement and never saw any sunlight and it too turned yellow.

Wait...maybe they were meant to do that...ya know, change colors....just like those Hot Wheels cars.

i've seen a lot of snes consoles that have normal tops, but the bottom half is yellowed. at one point i thought it was a variation since i had seen so many of them.

My SNES is in the process of turning yellow. Has been for years. It hasn't reached that extent yet, but if that's the end result...

    From what I heard....

Early SNES units were developed completely in Japan and then shipped to the US.

After NAFTA was established, it became cheaper to develop portions in Mexico and then ship them up to the US. However, the Mexican plants had a slightly different recipe for their plastic.

In short, the sand content in the newer units cause them to turn colors.

This is my experience with the matter:

Sister got an SNES for Christmas of 1991 or 92, right now it's yellowed.

I picked up a 5 dollar SNES in a thrift that needed its fuse replaced. It had a Repair Service sticker just underneath the power switch with a little illustration of Mario on it, which suggests it's a later model. No yellowing.

Bought mine new in late 94, its been in the sun, in the dark, and has been with me in all 5 of my residences since. Still fires right up, still works great, still looks like it just came out of the box.. Maybe it has a little to do with the owner?!

    AAAAAHHH!

it's the plastic people. It's not smoke or sun. It's the plastic. later versions are better, but some made in the "middle" of the SNES's life ar half and half, which is even uglier IMO.

**Omnedon** Is right about the Plastic i have in the past 2 or 3 years picked up and sold about 15 or 20 Snes consoles some mint, some yellow in parts some completely yellow, i have had alot of these taken apart and even the inside is YELLOW?!? also the plastic when yellow is very week and cracks and chips easy, as well as the screw mounts inside snapping off when taking the screws out..

Dame mexican Bandits and there plastic.

I still put it down to Bad plastic, i think sun light will not help the matter either, it's the same for the plastic on old PC monitors and photocopiers / printers etc they go a funny color, after a few years..

It's probably a company thing to shame people into buying new machines lol..... just kiddin.. :P

Also if you can't stand the color and have abit of skill with a spray can get some black spray paint! Make sure it's Gloss Black (or what ever color you like) But black covers alot of little marks..

Take your snes apart it has about 7 or 8 pieces you need to spray paint don't do it when it's all together it will look crap!!

I will post some picks of my Bad@$$ jet black snes it looks cool, it is a perfect match for the killer instinct snes cart!!! Very Nice!!

It wouldn't take too much effort to respray the external parts of a SNES with some fresh semi-gloss gray paint. The problem for perfectionists, however, is in the logos -- you'd have to be able to dry-transfer the new "Super Nintendo Entertainment System" text back onto the freshened surface without it looking like you did it yourself. Any ideas on how that might be accomplished?

    Hi Duncan,

I'm a perfectionist, but it's close to impossible to dry-transfer the logo's it can be done but i think it would take a few tries!! as in a few snes consoles, i'll post some pics very soon of my snes in black, i went over the logo's and to be honest i think it looks pretty cool, and i'm a hard guy to please! when i go about things like this

Also i'm working on the idea of having the nintendo logo (top right of the console) to be lit up in red!! l.e.d's

Snes in jet black -------> Pics coming soon!!

Nice. I'm thinking an alternative to the Nintendo logo on painted decks would be a vinyl cut-out sticker like you see on car windows.

Do you mean like a big sticker?!? thats kind of funny, i buy alot of stuff (Nintendo / snes) from the US and i bought a few nintendo logo vinyl stickers (awhile bak) but if i use them i'll need to use the letters only and not the hoop that goes around the letters. the nintendo would fit just nicely!!

But if you mean a small sticker i get what your saying, also i could paint the little ninny logo white, just the letters and the hoop!!

I'd luv to do something with a few leds like maybe put some inside the cart slot so once the game is plugged in and the snes switched on you'd get a glow coming from out of the snes cart slot and it'd light up the game pak as well.

Would only really work in dark rooms!! lol.. But if the led(s) were bright enuff and say maybe in red or blue it would look pretty cool..

Am i taking this snes modifing alittle to far :P
