I'd go Neo Geo. The 3DO library is about 99% crap-o-la IMO.

Im kind of a fanboy for Neo Geo now. As much as the load times will drive you crazy if you dont have a beer or eating a meal in between rounds, Id definitely go with the Neo Geo CD. It has FAR better games than the 3DO, and the 3DO apparently is proving to be an unreliable retro system to invest in. $700 and its had a ton of break downs for people. Plus you can get the CD versions of the AES games for good prices on ebay. It would have been a much faster system if it had another processor, but the point of it was to sell for a good price since the AES was so expensive. Thats really the only problem with it. Also the clicking of the controller will either be cool to you or annoy people around you, but I like it. Its cheap since people hate it so much.

Get the usual Neo Geo games like King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, King of The Monsters, World Heroes, Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Galaxy Fight looks cool, Metal Slug and Twinkle Star Sprites for shooters, and Sengoku for a beat em up. If youve never played Neo Geo fighters, theyre hard but worth investing in. Im gonna buy a Neo Geo X Gold in December and gonna play the hell out of it and nail all the games it has that I want. Honestly, I think at this point that would be a better investment, theyre going to be releasing games for it. http://www.racketboy.com/retro/snkne...-games-defined

If you do get a 3DO then Luciens Quest and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo are really the only games Id recommend. I never got into Gex, but thats on it as well. i like this site for suggestions for different games. The board may even have guys selling each system. http://www.racketboy.com/retro/3do/g...ve-multiplayer

PS, why are you thinking of buying these of all the older systems, and why not a Turbo Duo? Are these just the last ones to get but you can only get one right now? WHat other classic systems do you like?

The 3DO actually has a really good port of Samurai Shodown. I'd go with the Neo CD, though. Not only does it have the superior SamSho 2, it doesn't have a library loaded with crappy FMV games.

The 3DO can be bought for $50 or less nowadays.

If you're a fan of shooters and fighters, definitely pick the Neo Geo CD. It has a couple of AAA titles in Twinkle Star Sprites and Puzzle Bobble. Other lesser stuff is available, but nothing is really too bad. I like Baseball Stars a lot, and that's neither a shooter nor a fighter.

The 3DO is probably more well rounded and has more top quality games. I absolutely love and adore classics like Twisted and Zhadnost, Psychic Detective, and D. It also has a few decent fighters and puzzlers like Samurai Showdow, SSFIIT, the Shin Chan puzzle game, and Trip'd.

Overall, the lower echelon of both systems' libraries are close in quality, but 3DO has more variety and more top-level games. If I recall correctly, it has also had more games released overall.

Im glad its not a completely one sided thread for one over the other, but:

The 3DO's best games were also on better systems, it really doesnt have its own character outside of focusing on FMV games like the Sega CD did, but it also had a ton of sports games since the creator was the founder of EA. I said it was $700 because I wanted to point out that it was extremely expensive at the time of its release and it wasnt as durable as a lot of people would want with that price tag. I havent heard that the NGCD has a high rate of failure. There are games on the Neo Geo CD that are on other systems, but by far more of its core games were better on Neo Geo systems, the SNES of course didnt have CD quality sound which means the truer experience is on the Neo Geo CD and Fatal Fury is terrible on the Genesis.

With both systems you can say that eventually their best games were ported to other systems making them quasi-unnecessary, but out of the two I prefer the Neo Geo CD, its easy to find the great games for it and theyre affordable. I guess the more mysterious kind of quest would be to scour for the 3DO versions of games out there which were also on it.

Disagree with your views on the 3do completely. A number of the games on the 3do were console exclusive to the 3do, even if some of them did end up on the PC. While there are quite a few FMV games for the system, there are also a lot of really unique games like Zhadnost or Twisted and some of the best 32 bit versions of games like Road Rash and Return Fire were on the 3do despite having later and inferior Playstation ports.

I think the Neo Geo is great, but there is a lack of variety in its games. I own an AES, an MVS cab and the Neo Geo CD and other than fighting games, shmups and a handful of platform games early on, there were very few games of the complexity of those released on the 3do. Frankly, Neo Geo was always meant to be an arcade system with arcade style games. 3do was meant more as a system for mid-90s console gamers or PC gamers who were tired of constantly upgrading their PCs to play the latest games.

Neo Geo CD, easily. 3DO's are a dime a dozen, and as far as retro gaming goes, I just feel like the arcadey games of SNK's platform are far more enjoyable and fun to collect. With that said, I don't own a Neo Geo CD. I do own 2 3DOs and several games, and am a fan of the 3DO platform.

Yeah I dont care for Road Rash. Neo Geo was just a arcade company that wanted people to have an arcade console in their home, and thats really unique to me. The 3DO games that Ive looked into dont interest me that were released on other systems. But not a lot of praise is written on them, so if you have a big list of great games for it, that would be a good thing read.

Why these two systems? 3D0 doesn't have much worth playing, and the Neo Geo CD has those abysmally long loading times. Isn't there anything else that interests you?

I ended up buying a 3DO, because the Neo Geo CD was just too expensive. The reason I wanted to choose between these two is because I already have almost every popular system out there so I wanted to try something different.

3DO has some quality games. Check out the Wing Commanders, Gex, Super SF2 Turbo, Samurai Shodown, Road Rash, Star Control II, Guardian War... all excellent. Sewer Shark also had its best version on 3DO, if you're into a rail shooter with some FMV in there.

The NeoGeo CD still gets the occasional indie game, and might one day get a fan translation of the Samurai Spirits RPG, but that's about the only advantage.

Since you're in on 3DO, keep an eye out for The Incredible Machine (I believe it's the only console version ever made), which is a lot of fun. If you can track it down and like quirkier stuff, Way of the Warrior is a pretty bad but incredibly amusing Mortal Kombat clone with White Zombie providing all the music.

Great list. I think I played the 3do more than any other console of its generation and continued to play it well into the PS2/Dreamcast era. I still remember scooping up piles of new games for $5 and $10 each at Gamestop as they were clearing them out. I literally hit something like 12 locations in one day back when Gamestop wasn't on every block.

I would go with the 3DO because.....it has Vivid porn games. Actually it has a nice small amount of good titles, though not nearly as many as the more popular systems. It's also import friendly due to being region free. I have never played the Neo Geo CD and although I want to eventually get one I will echo Urzu402's sentiments that the NGCD has always been expensive whenever I looked at available systems. Hopefully I'll find one on the cheap one day. The 3DO isn't the most common system in everyone's area but when you do find the system and games they are usually very affordable and easy to collect for. For that reason alone I'd pick the 3DO over the NGCD.

I personally wouldn't get either one. I have a Neo-Geo CD and I hardly ever play it, the library is mostly shooters and fighting games, so unless you really love those 2 genres (I like shooters fine but hate fighting games) it's not really worth the time. Plus, the load times are atrocious and it's kind of a fragile system. I only keep mine around just in case I get hard up for cash and need to sell it. The 3DO pretty much sucks, most of the good games are available for other systems and the majority of the rest is FMV garbage. The controller is a piece of shit and good 3rd party pads are impossible to find and expensive as all hell. And the system itself is shoddily built crap. Get the Neo-Geo if you love shooters and fighters or just want something as an investment, pass on the 3DO altogether unless you have to own every system ever made.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but you really haven't presented any helpful or insightful information here. Saying the 3do sucks and that most of the good games are available for other systems and that everything else is FMV just isn't true as the very nice list a few posts above illustrates. The controller on the 3do is just as durable as any other pad of its era IMHO and I have never had either an FZ-1 or an FZ-10 die on me.
