Default Next NES purchase, help me choose

From the local store, it's a decision between:

    Clu Clu Land
    Little Mermaid
    The Guardian Legend
    Mach Rider
    Wall Street Kid

I'm leaning towards The Guardian Legend

Out of those games, The Little Mermaid. It's a Disney Capcom game, it's going to be decent. I've played The Guardian Legend and pretty much hated it after 5 minutes, Dragon Spirit is a better shooter.

If you take the Guardian Legend for what it is, then you will consider it a great game. Though the gameplay may be slightly repetitive, it was one of the first "hybrids", a combo of action adventure and shoot 'em up. It is an interesting game. If anything, I would call the experience unique.

Yeah, Guardian Legend would be my choice out of those.

You buy stocks, you sell stocks and then you use the money generated from the selling in order to invest in more stocks. Rinse and repeat until you hid a preset money limit. After that, you move onto the next part of the game.

From both a value and enjoyment/originality standpoint, I'd definitely go with Guardian Legend. I see copies of mermaid floating around all the time; it's pretty fun, but not capcom's absolute best, and this won't be the last time you see it.

Joust or The Guardian Legend, but leaning more towards Joust. Little Mermaid is way too easy for me to recommend for someone's "next NES purchase." I haven't played Mach Rider, though.

Each of the games have problems, so take your pick:

Clu Clu Land - is a fun, but repetitive and simple puzzle game. It's worth owning, but don't expect to get too much play time out of it.

Little Mermaid - a surprisingly decent game, thanks to it being a Disney/Capcom game. It's easy. but it's enjoyable. This is my pick if you're going to only get one game.

The Guardian Legend - Originally underrated, I think this game is now OVERRATED by the retro gaming community as a whole. It's in theory a shoot em up mixed with Zelda with elements of Metroid, but I've never been much of a fan. It doesn't do any one thing well or terribly, it's just an average game with a lot of hype built up around it today because it was forward thinking.

Mach Rider - Essentially, Nintendo's answer to Pole Position. A somewhat enjoyable racing game, but you'll get board quickly. and GOOD LUCK figuring out the course editor.

Joust - This is what Balloon Fight is based on, and Balloon Fight is superior in every way. If you're interested in this one, get Balloon Fight.

Wall Street Kid - It's a stock market simulator videogame. Absurdly boring, but at least you play as the biggest asshole in all of 8-bit gaming.

I totally need to import this game... it's on my list along with Friday the 13th.

According to the rarity guide, The Little Mermaid is actually rarer than The Guardian Legend, although The Little Mermaid is only slightly on the uncommon side. I haven't come across it myself just yet.

Anyway, I'd recommend the The Guardian Legend too, but I don't have experience with all of them.

I'd say that F1 Race is Nintendo's answer to Pole Position. Mach Rider is their answer to Hang-On - with guns.

I thought little mermaid would be dumber than dumb, but it was smarter with more cool stuff.

I'd go with The Little Mermaid. It's indeed easy, but it's also fun - much more than you'd ever expect. I've had it since the old days, but still give it a shot every now and then. The soundtrack is pretty cool too.

I have Wall Street Kid. How appropriate I'm holding it only as an investment!

I oughta try it out sometime...hmm, but onto the other games on the list. Some of those sound interesting actually.

Joust. It's a classic from the Golden Age of the Arcade and it is fun solo or with another player either cooperatively or competitively. While, it is not the most amazing of the the Golden Age batch, it is still a decent way to kill time here and there trying to reach higher and higher scores.

I definitely prefer Balloon Fight as well. With that said, there is one thing that Joust has over Balloon Fight: a sense of panic. When that damnable pterodactyl shoots across the screen it kicks my fight or flight in much harder than when the lightning bolts bounce across Balloon Fight.

I would also give a vote to The Guardian Legend. You get a mix of perspectives since you are spending time between wandering the surface world and fighting bosses (in ship form) in the dungeons. I think it provides a good sense of adventure.

But it also depends on what your interest is.

With games like Joust and Clu Clu land, you may spend less time on the game, but they are the types of games where you can just pop them in, start playing them at almost any time, you can play them for a short (or long) time and you can always come back and try to better your performance.

So, any of the three would give a good bang for your buck, depending on what you're looking for.

I think I'm going to go with Guardian and Little Mermaid (I'm sure Joust will still be there when I make my next monthly visit). I remember Joust from the arcade days (and remember liking it), and I had Mach Rider growing up, but wasn't sure if I'd find it as fun now as I did back in the day.

Mach Rider was a black box launch title. As with almost all of the black box games (Tennis, Baseball, etc) Mach Rider is alright, but you're only likely to get enjoyment out of it for a few minutes longer than the typical Atari 2600 game. It's just not one that will hold your interest for very long at all.
