Hi all,
So there were a few comments in this thread right here about clearing games on the hardest difficulty, and it got me thinking: Which games had the most difficult 2nd loop, or at least the most drastic increase in difficulty on the 2nd loop?
Lots of people agree on several of the most difficult games (GnG, Battletoads, etc) but many of those are beat with one clear and have no 2nd loop, and if there is a 2nd (or 3rd) loop, the difficulty only increases slightly (example: Contra, SMB1).
Metal Storm (NES) comes to mind for me. The game was difficult, certainly, but the 2nd loop seriously cranked it up. It reminded me of R-Type in the sense that you had no choice but to die, die, die, and die some more as you tried to figure out the one exact path you needed to take to get through each portion of a level, and then had to pull it off perfectly. That attribute really turned me off of R-Type and I really don't like the game that much, but with Metal Storm, I just couldn't stop playing it until I cleared it. Pretty sure I broke at least one controller in the process, too.
