Default PS2 corrupt data save?? why?

I just bought shin megami tensei nocturne and had no problems playing it, I saved my game and everything was fine, when I died I could load my game save without a problem. I switched my game and played MGS3 and at the very beginning I tried to save, but it said it cant save there was a problem... so I reset my ps2 and saw 2 corrupted data saves, i deleted both I could not see what they were. I booted MGS3 again and now I could save. I then went back to SMT and surprise, my corrupted data appeared to be my game save. im %^&* pissed I was 5 hours in game. What could cause corrupt data, is it a one time problem? or is my ps2 or mem card fucked up? I never had a single problem with my ps2, I didnt play it for a couple of years and felt like playing a couple of games.

Is your card an official Sony one or a third party card? The only good third party cards are the Nyko branded ones, all the others are a crapshoot.

Did you clean the connectors on the memory card? They get dirty too, it's not just cartridge based games.

MadCatz has good ones too. They had cards that were officially licensed by Sony, just like Nyko. My MadCatz is just as reliable as my Sony.

Anyway, is it possible you pulled out the card or turned off the power while saving/loading? On real cards, that's a common way to get corruption (and why games usually have a warning not to do that). Otherwise, well, electronics just don't last forever, even properly made ones. It's possible your card might just be going bad.
