I've owned a Hori Mini for quite some time, it's certainly a high quality controller, very similar to the stock Nintendo controller. It's a nice controller for stuff like Super Mario 64 and Mario Party where precision or a lot of buttons aren't required. The Hori Mini (and most third party controllers) is a poor choice for games like F-Zero X where you need a lot of precision. This is just my opinion, but it's also a less than appropriate choice for Zelda 64 where it's easy to confuse the Z buttons with the L and R buttons, but then the Dual Shock confuses me sometimes too. If that's not a problem then that's another game good for the Hori Mini.
Someone said the D-pad is hardly ever used. Yes not many games used it for the main method of input. That said, almost all first person shooters (of which there are lots) support the D-pad and Control stick together, similar to the dual control stick method of modern consoles. That to me gives the N64 d-pad a lot of use.
How exactly is it superior for the more common secondary usages, if secondary in this case means first person shooters. Modern consoles all use the left stick for walking and the right stick for aiming. The N64 is the perfect console for older FPS games because of its controller. Sure, it would have been better if the N64 had a PS1-style controller, but the PS1 didn't have as many FPS games, or at least good ones.
It was already explained in what I quoted. Sorry, I don't know how to state it any clearer than I already have.

lol
That wasn't me being huffy, it was honesty. I simply didn't think I could do anything more than restate the exact same thing with slightly changed wording, resulting in no better of an explanation than I already had provided.
I don't understand your confusion, but perhaps pictures will better illustrate why the d-pad location on the Hori can actually be to one's advantage when it's utilized for secondary functions in a title that relies on the analog stick for directional control.
Obviously, the d-pad isn't accessible when holding the controller properly while using the analog stick, necessitating removing your left hand away from the center over to the left handle whenever you need to access the d-pad for something.
As clearly shown here, not only is the d-pad accessible to your left thumb on the Hori controller, but it's also equally within easy reach of your right thumb as well without shifting how you're holding the controller.
I just don't see the confusion here? Surely you can see how the Hori location could actually be better in situations where it's used for secondary purposes like changing settings and such (The most common use of the d-pad on the N64 controller by far), doubling as extra buttons rather than your primary directional input.

mine just got here, and sure enough not seen by the system.
physically the controller is in excellent shape.
time to pop it open
edit:
sadly it is very dead
I tried a new cable, reflowing solder points, replacing the cap and nothing works. I've been working on it since I originally posted this and its not 2:35pm
I have a feeling its something electrical, nothing is getting juice and I don't see any fuses.
I did notice that the PCB it self is separating on 2 corners, almost like it was part of a bad batch and theres a big possibility that its separated where I cant see it disconnecting it from the other side.
so i'll keep an eye out for another cheap one and hopefully its got a bad housing that I can swap

If you do swap housings, I'd hang on to the dead one if I were you even after doing so. You never know when you might need something else off it to repair your good one. As good as Hori's design and construction is, stuff like buttons can and do fail from time to time on even the best of controllers.
I doubt that had to be said to someone willing to take a chance like you did in trying to revive it, since I bet that was already your plan anyways in the event that you couldn't revive it.
