Default Can a 16:9 SD CRT TV display in 4:3 without the bars?

The title says it all. I have a 16:9 tube tv that I would like to use for 4:3 without bars. I have yet to get a universal remote, so I cannot change the settings myself. Is there any hope for this tv?

    Not without distorting the image.

If the monitor is physically 16:9 in aspect ratio, how could it possibly display a 4:3 image without any pillarboxing? Unless you're asking if the image can be distorted to 16:9 so it looks horrible, I can't see why anyone would prefer this to be done.

I wish someone would tell the cable networks this. Hey, TBS, I don't want to see Al Bundy all stretched out and weird looking!

haha I have to agree about TV shows being cropped like that. During the FXX Simpsons marathon it was pretty bad. They go through all the trouble to make it look worse than it was. I think it is just old people who don't understand aspect ratios. I can remember my parents being pissed off when a movie was widescreen and we were missing part of the picture...
