Default Mario kart double dash. Bad controls?

So i was feeling all mario kartish after playing the new dlc pack for mario kart 8. Is it just me or the controls terrible on this game? I have no trouble getting first second or third place most of the time in mario kart wii,7 or 8.

Double dash feels like the controls are super loose. I can see bananas a good way down the track but still careen into them. I am using a generic but seemingly decent controller. Does this game have slippery controls or do i just suck at it lol.

Probably the latter, but more likely, brought about by being so used to the controls of the later games that you haven't gotten back used to how MKDD controlled.

The newer games controls are more tight. Dash is a bit slippery, I was decent in the game but going back I need practice to get back to those controls.

    60/40 suck/generic controller

The game handles just fine, but each Mario kart handles differently up until really 7 and 8 since they're mostly the same game/design setup just with the tweaks/differences to push one or the other. DD was one of the last really nice ones and it always surprised me they never had the buddy in back system come back.

I never had an issue but I was using a wavebird when ever I played it, its a decent controller but has some amount of lag to it

Yeah, that always bothered me about Double Dash. The controls are indeed quite loose compared to other titles, most likely an attempt to add some realism to the tandem riding. Starting with the DS iteration, the controls are right where they need to be.
