Default Happy 10th Anniversary Microsoft Xbox 360

It's hard to believe that it's already been 10 years but a decade ago today Microsoft launched what has without a doubt been their very best console. I didn't pick mine up until 2009 but it quickly became apparent to me that this system was going to be an instant classic. While previous systems had added features such as the ability to play cds or dvds, the 360 was the first(to my knowledge) to go full multimedia hub, allowing you to stream and watch movies/tv and listen to music via apps or disc, browse the web and of course play games too.

Despite some early hardware issues, which they eventually over came with various revisions, Microsoft constantly improved upon an already great system, adding larger hard drives, more reliable hardware, built-in wireless and more apps than we would ever have time to use. And also arguably the best line-up of last gen. Well not arguably to me but for some people.

The 360 had a lot going for it but my three favorite things were:

1.) the achievement/gamer score system, an ingenious way to take bragging rights and seemingly meaningless task to new levels

2.) the party system, which made it possible for me to be playing Halo while chatting with one friend watching Netflix, another listening to a cd, another playing Uno, another uploading pictures and yet another watching porn on the browser

3.) the games: Alan Wake, Shadow Complex, Halo series, Gears of War series, Left 4 Dead series and hundreds more of first and third party games, including lots of awesome multi-platform games

The Xbox One may still be searching for it's identity but the Xbox 360 will always represent a high mark for Microsoft's video game console ambitions.

The Xbox 360 was a console I initially was not at all interested in, as the style of games seemed much more western/PC style, and just not the sort of thing I was super into. However, one day my old roommate decided to get one. I went with him, and he picked out BioShock and Crackdown. We went home and fired it up, and holy shit, that firey plane crash on the water stunned me. I hadn't been impressed by graphics in a long time, but that... that was clearly new-gen shit. I went out the next day and got one, and, well... I didn't play so much BioShock. I love the atmosphere there, but Crackdown became the game. We hooked up a LAN and started mowing down gangs together, talking shit when we found new orbs or leveled a skill up. We played the hell out of that game. However, a long dry spell followed.

Yeah, I picked up the odd shooters that came out; Raiden Fighters, Death Smiles... even imported a few. Got into Nier for awhile, with it crazy twists like those awesome text adventure dreams. Nothing new hooked me, though, and it started to collect dust. Then, one day, I stumbled across a copy of Culdcept Saga.

I was into Fortune Street pretty heavily, but Culdcept Saga offered a new level of intrigue with its deck building, which took me back to my Star Wars: CCG days. I figured I'd be playing alone, but my wife, who also loves Fortune Street, said she'd try it. I figured she'd be turned off by the complexity of card collecting and deck building, which she'd usually find boring, but I was wrong. Together, we've logged at least 400 hours or Culdcept Saga over the years, and still go strong during the winter every year. My wife now has her own special 360 controller, her own profile, and had been known to call me at inappropriate times at work when she has a question about the game.

The 360 has never been an across the board heavy hitter in my life, but there are a handful of games that hit like a ton of bricks, and I love it for them.

Huh, it is hard to believe it's been ten years already. The 360 is certainly my favorite Microsoft console, and, really, the only one I give a damn about at all (still don't own an original Xbox and I have zero interest in the One). For all of Microsoft's cluelessness about Japan and the middling success they've had over there, the 360 got surprisingly good support from Japanese developers and kept my tastes satisfied.

Xbox 360 represents the beginning of modern gaming, everything else before it is now classic in my eyes. Much like how PS2 used to represent modern gaming, and so, time to update the digitalpress forum descriptions, IMHO.

Fantastic console. I 'jumped in' at the right time, mid-cycle, in 2009. It was very good not to have to deal with RROD. I would not say that I was especially lucky, because by the time I got an Xbox 360, the current model at the time ('Jasper' unit with reasonably cool 65nm CPU and 65nm GPU) was pretty solid. The worst I ever experienced was some game freezes / lock-ups that needed nothing more than unplugging the power cord.

So many amazing games, I don't know where to begin. Now even though I didn't own a 360 in 2005, I often played the demo units in stores. Call of Duty 2 blew me away and so did Kameo Elements of Power.

GameSpot has an excellent article up: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/how.../1100-6432469/

The 360 is a great console, the launch was perfect and the launch titles, among them Project Gotham Racing and Kameo, had very good quality. (In particular Kameo by Rare got never the acclaim it deserved, still today I think that it is an amazing game.) And the console is for sure the first step to put an entertainment center in form of a game console in the living room, like it or not.

But let's not forget the awful aspect of this launch: MS knew of the overheating problem and launched the system nevertheless. Around 80% of the systems, so it is assumed, got the RRD, so mine. The first console which broke down on me. The generous extension of warranty by MS was a measure to gain the trust of consumers back AND avoid law suits which they certainly would have lost.

Even though I was clearly in the PS3 camp, I bought a 360 and have assembled a library for it that appeals to my tastes made of up exclusives that are not on PS3 or for whatever reason simply better on 360.

I find it really weird how many shmups there are for 360 considering they're almost all Japanese developed and how poorly the Xbox 360 sold in Japan. I guess the unpopular hardware of the 360 was better than the notoriously difficult to program for PS3 when it comes to smaller budget titles.

Overall, I'm kinda mixed on my opinion of the Xbox 360. The hardware was really unreliable for much of its life and I don't think will age well into the future as a classic gaming console. Everything about the 360, from its hardware to dependence on xbox live to play indie games - just screams "temporary".

On the other hand, I'm a huge fan of the original Xbox. Reliable hardware, nearly everything has 480p as a minimum, a fairly large and robust library of many games that still hold up now, and that awesome homebrew scene that continues to support it with updates to CoinOps and Vision. Plus, I like the feel of the Controller S way better than the 360 controller. Much better dpad too.

The Japanese have proven through three hardware generations that they will overall not support Microsoft's systems regardless of the level of Japanese support. Granted the original Xbox didn't get much in the way of Japanese support but the 360 received a very good amount of Japanese developed games. As you mentioned there was no shortage of quality shooters, including Radiant Silvergun which I had wanted on my Saturn for a long time but refused to pay the $120-$250 price it was going for.

I think there was a decent amount of Japanese developed games made for the Japanese, many of which never came over here to the US, but the Japanese stayed fairly uninterested. This was ultimately balanced out by how well the system sold through out the rest of the world but Microsoft at least took notice. And as such, at this point I'm not even sure why Microsoft continues to even make their consoles available in Japan other than using that as a reason to still keep Japanese support for their bigger franchise's such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy, etc.

Really amazing that it's been that long, and reminds me how last gen went on far too long.

Alan Wake is one of best games available on the 360. I personally never found it to be scary(and I've beaten it multiple times) but it was definitely suspenseful. But both of those feelings go along with what Remedy had classified the game as: a suspense thriller.
