The dialog is laughable but the animation is great.

They should just go play Tapper and see where it leads them. <3
I'm usually ready to dismiss videos like this, but it was pretty cool, actually. The animation had a great, classic style to it, the representation of the first level of R-Type was surprisingly good, and even though the dialogue might not have been amazing, it still worked. I'd watch more of this.
I think the closest there's been to anime-style artwork for R-Type was probably in R-Type Complete CD on PC Engine Super CD-ROM. It had cinema intro, between-level cutscenes and a pretty nice ending.

all the cutscenes are in this video, can skip through the gameplay and see it all in about 10 min or less.
The video playback of the PCE CD family held back what could be done, the PC-FX's jpeg video playback would have served this sort of thing much better.
I have R-Type Complete. It's okay, but I don't like its remixed soundtrack as much as the original.
I totally agree on the remixed soundtrack.
R-Type Complete CD was actually shown on Paul Johnson's Twitter @ OtaKing77077. I guess part of his research for the animation-

*gesture* "COME to me!
im dyin
"You know nobody dies on the first boss, don't you?"
That was enjoyable, though it makes the first level of R-Type seem WAY more intense than it actually is. Still, it seems like a G.I. Joe/Transformers-era throwback and homage to what I would have thought actually being in a game like that might have felt like.
