Default Are old game magazines worth anything?

There's this shop that my dad occasionally stops in at, and they have two boxes of videogame magazines there for people to read. I'm pretty sure they're selling them for about a buck each. There's old PC magazines (around Quake 2 time), but what surpised me the most was seeing a few Commodore 64 mags. I didn't go through the pile, because I didn't have that much time.

So what do you reckon? Ignore them, buy a couple, or get as many as possible (with won't be much, because I don't have a lot of money).

I love old videogame and computer magazines. Things like Electronic Games and other 80's magazines can go for up to $20 in good shape. I'm not so sure that you'll get much for Quake II computer game magazines but I'd pick them up if they weren't too much.

Yeah, from what I caught glimpses of, the PC mags were from around Quake 2's time, and I didn't expect they'd be worth much.

I was thinking more along the lines of the Commodore 64 magazines. I'll make sure to have a good look at them next time I'm there.

I remember programming games on my C64 back in the day, with code lifted straight outta the gaming mags of the time. Some of 'em were pretty damn fun too. If you've got a C64, I'd recommend picking a couple up and giving it a try (assuming they have such mags).

Sometime in late-1998 I traded away my entire collection of old videogame magazines (every copy of Electronic Games, and several other various mags, making a total of 61 magazines).

I sent the mags to somebody in the Midwest, I think, but don't really remember who it was or where he lived.

At any rate, in return for the magazines he sent me a modded Playstation with 5 or 6 copied sports games, and one genuine game (NFL Gameday 98). He also sent me a working Vectrex with the Vectrex multicart.

So, at least in my case, they were definitely worth something!

I had close to a twelve year collection of Gamepros...which sadly I gave up to norkusa a while ago I seriously doubt any were worth much, especially the ragged condition some of the older ones were...

I'd like to fill the empty chest with old books full of TI994A and C64 programs...but I haven't been too lucky finding anything yet.

I'd go for some of the C64 mags if they're early on the machines life. I used to have loads of Your Sinclair magazines and some Crash & Sinclair Users. YS was a superb magazine and is fondly remembered here

Guess what I did with them all? Threw them away when I needed the space. A moment of stupidity!

I'm still trying to sell off a few old Nintendo Power magazines (not to mention my fine collection of orphans). They're in great shape... Any takers?

They're worth more than I thought, and I already thought they weren't that cheap (it probably also depends on which magazine it is). Pick them up, fun to read.

I have to agree as well, snag 'em if you can. Even the old PC magazines are a blast from the past. My dad had some from 1991/1992 and seeing how the 486 DX systems were "going to make a splash" made me laugh or how 500 MB was "really huge" along with the really high prices back then.

I can't really say how much in demand game mags are from the 70s and 80s. Yjere is an interesting archive on this site with scans, look it up.
I'm a sucker for old mags.

However, among the "newer" game mags Nintendo Power is ceratinly more in demand than any other magazine. (Maybe the Sega Dreamcast mag more becasue of the Demo discs which are regarded officially Dreamcast releases)

The first two years of Nintendo Power in very good condition can fetch some good prices on ebay. I think the reason is NP was back then a lil' stsretegy guide for the best games, covering with maps 50 -100 % of certain games. (Crystalis, Battletoads, in three issues Castlevania 3 completely covered, etc.) No other mag delivered that. Gamepro isn't as nearly high in demand than the early NPs. Also watch out for the startegy guides which were official NP releases (Super mario 3, Final Fantasy, Ninja Gaiden, and the less important 4 Player Extra).

I sold a guy on ebay once my second mint NP guide "Final Fantasy 3", and since he was interested in absolutely mint stuff he offered me for the frst ten issues of NP $15-20 each.

Startegy guides in very good condition can also be very high in demand, the early Guides from NP (SNES Zelda, Super Metroid, FF3, Chrono Trigger), and also the early guides by Prima in balck and white (Breath of Fire 1 and 2, Mana) E.g. The Prima guide for the PS1 "Blood Omen Legacy of kain" fetches on ebay around $40 in very good condition; the game you can get for $20.

I'd go for 80s and 70s mags, I love to read them. It's interesting to read predictions for certain systems or the entire industry, to read the review of the new hot Super C.

I never threw a game mag away. I have a mint condition, never used NP collection from vol. 1 until today, Gmaepro from 1990 til today, EGM from 90 to 98, all SwatPros, all EGM buyers Guides (yearly), and lots of other stuff. I just love game mags.

It depends if there is a market I'm not trying to discourage you but...
I have posted nearly all of my videogame mags in the Buying and Selling forum and I only sold 4 issues out of over 200. Any takers I NEED THE CASH,
I have: Sega Power, Game Pro, EGM, EGM2 and Extreme Gamer some going back to 1990.

Some are worth more than others. THe first couple issues of EGM and Gamepro and the first issue of NP can usually fetch a good amount.
