I say it like Marry-o. I always thought it was pronounced that way. I grew up on saying his name like that, and although I'm really sure it's Marr-ee-o, I just keep saying Marry-o. I'll never change...

good god!
Mar-ee-o
There just is no other way
Yes, the second way. When I was over in Italy several years ago I had asked this exact same question to the guide--and she said it was the second way.
Marr-ee-o just like loogie says it in that mansion game.
My life and perception has changed, but my principals are the same.
Cheezus. Am I the only one that says it like Marry-o? I feel so alone...

For you Final Fantasy 7 people, my friend pointed this out: Sephiroth. Is it SeP-ih-roth or SeF-ih-roth because of the 'ph'. The 'One winged angel" music from the final boss battle says it the first way. Just wondering.

The One Winged Angel song still has the "eff" sound asperated, like sef-ih-roth. It's just difficult to tell because they are singing in latin and the accent is funky if you're not used to it. Having done PLENTY (probably more than I'd like) of singing in Latin, I can promise you that it's pronounced the second way, even in the song.
I grew up saying Marry-o and used to have arguments when someone told me I was pronouncing it wrong. I have since learned that my pronounciation is, in fact, incorrect. However... I don't care! Marry-o just sounds right to me. In 2050 when I'm an old man on the verge of death, I'll STILL be saying Marry-o.

Hey Marr-ee-o
I'm Italian, but back when I lived in New York my family and I always called him 'Mary-yo'. now, I've accepted 'Mah-ree-yoh' since I've heard so many people say it that way. I'm more of a Sonic person myself, in any case.

I say Mario like everyone else.
And Sephiroth I say = "SeF-ih-roth"
