So why didn't they mention Mario64, the first game where 3D-platforming really worked...

Because that's important and not necessarily a moment. A moment (IMO) is something happening during a game that really stands out for one reason or another. The importance of the game itself doesn't matter at all (although if something memorable happens in an important game it should move it up the list).

Samus removing her mask in Metroid was memorable, because it was unexpected. The Opera Scene was unexpected. Psychomantis' Rant was unexpected. Unless there was something in Mario 64 that was unexpected (and the fact that the game is 3D doesn't count) then it doesn't belong. IMO.

If what you say is true, then you can remove 50% of the games listed above...

The first time I saw Mario64 in motion, I was truly awed. It was just incredible to watch the little plumber running around in an completely 3D enviroment...it really opened my eyes to the future of gaming, suddenly everything was possible.

If that`s not a moment, nothing is...

Ok, so it was not a in-game moment...but still one of the greatest jaw-dropping moments in my gaming-history... :P
