Default PS2 vs Xbox - Which is the better DVD player?

For those who have both systems and the DVD capabilities of both, which do you think is a better DVD player?

although it's annoying to buy a kit to use it I'd say the xbox hands down has the better player

I'm more partial to the PS2, since I've been using it as my primary player since I got it. I used the Xbox DVD kit for a short time and got rid of it since I saw little to no difference between the two picture-wise.

Xbox can do Dolby Digital 5.1, so that's a plus if you are an audiophile.

I only have a PS2 (thinking of getting an Xbox soon, which is why I ask) run through composite cables. I'm just tired of having to crank the volume to max in order to hear anything on the PS2.

Can you run optical audio? If so, do it. Makes a world of difference.

I will agree with you, the PS2 is pretty quiet when it comes to speech and low-level sound. Bass and midrange come through loud and clear.

There are also differences between older PS2 systems and anything SCPH-50000 and later. The 50000 series has progressive scan output (unlike an unmodded Xbox). It also has a built-in IR receiver for newer remotes (not occupying a controller port like on older models). It also has better support for DVD+/-R and RW discs.

On the Xbox, you also need to buy the extra packs just to get an optical output port.

I'd say that the new PS2 is easily the best, followed by Xbox, followed by old PS2.

I'm also curious as to whether the Xbox can support DTS over optical output.

XBOX is a far superior DVD player, yes you have to buy a DVD kit and HD kit (if your TV is hdtv) but, you have to buy a memory card ($24.99) and a (shitty) component cable ($24.99) and an optical cable ($10-25) to get the PS2 (which WILL break[$179.99]) to do what the XBOX does for $40.

Also a good JVC (i.e. brand that will last longer than dvds will be manucactured) dvd player is like $75-100 and outperforms both of them. Just buy a dvd player.

at home, i use regular dvd players, because that is what they were made for to play dvds and video game systems were made to play games. at school where i dont have my $200 dvd player, i use the xbox always over the ps2. i just like dvd playback on the box a lot better

Sure, if you're talking about DTS soundtracks of movies on DVD. Both systems can output DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks from DVDs.

XBOX.. but depends on the system.

If you have an XBOX with the Samsung DVD drive in it, there is nothing it can't do.

I have a mod chip in mine, and I run the XBOX Media player. I can stream video from my regular PC to the XBOX and play it on the TV!

I can watch DVD, S-VCD, VCD, DivX as well as watch pictures in almost any format and listen to music in any standard (MP3, Ogg, WAV, Midi, etc).

Heck, I don't even have the XBOX DVD remote.. I just my joystick. The player in XMP looks like Windows Media player + PowerDVD combined. With my Samsung drive, I play every single DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW I throw at it.

I'm SO SICK of people saying/writing this- YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY SURE IT WILL BREAK???

I've had my PS2 since Launch Day, using it religiously (not a theological connotation) & NEVER had any problem. It's even positioned (*gasp*) VERTICALLY!

I'll post here the minute it breaks, just to let you know.

i dont know if i agree totally....some are built good and some arent. for instance, mine had a cupboard dropped on it and nothing happened to it cosmetically or functionally, but my roommates always needs to be opened up and cleaned and the front cd door cover thing fell off. some will break and some wont, thats just how it is.

neither, from researching and doing some testing of my own, ive found out tidbits. first of games and dvds run at 2 different speeds which can strain the eye on your game console. having been working with video games for a while now i been asking everyone who returns one why they are so, and 3/5 times they say it just stopped reading discs, and when i ask them if they use it as a main dvd player , very rarely i get a no. my ps2 and my uncles also had the same thing happen to it. therefore, neither, i shun away from usin my xbox and ps2 as a dvd player, so i have a seperate unit now

You have to configure it to bypass parental control. It's a user controlled/defined feature. The PS2 manual explains how- enter "4444" or "7777" or something. They wouldn't make the PS2 so you'd have to manually bypass it every time you play a DVD (which mine always has/does flawlessly).

I'm guessing lots of people don't bother reading the manual to get the most out of their product.

Also, the PS2 DVD capability is available right out of the box, & has been upgraded since Launch Day while the unit price has dropped. No point complaining about something you got free. So whaddya want?

I've heard so much on both sides of the fence on this issue (both here & elsewhere) that it's obviously a matter of personal preference.

Xbox has the better one for me because my PS2 uses an RF adapter and DVDs' color is REALLY screwed up with it, while my Xbox uses RCA and its color is fine. PS2 games' color is fine, though.
