There is a boot cd/drive slider that sells for under $10 that should allow you to play this. Just remember that you are manually forcing your drive open which is bad for it in the long run but shouldn't hurt it too much if you don't do it all the time.

Swap tricks or mods are your two choices. Mod chips are a much better long term solution, but if you want easier/faster/cheaper/dirtier, the answer is swapping.

    .

Being mechanical minded , I really disagree with this statement.

The part that you are pushing on with the slide card could care less whether you are moving it with a slide card or if it is the gear that is being turned by the motor that is moving it.

There is no possible way you are hurting it by using the slide card. It is a mechanicle piece that is being forced to the right to move gears to slide the tray open. So if the motor is moving it or the slide card is moving it , either way it is the same type of force being used.

It is the same as pushing the tray in with your hand or pushing the eject button. One way you are using the motor to close it and the other way you are using force to get it started and then the motor takes over. Neither way makes a difference . And with the power off you can slide the tray back and forth and it won't hurt anything.

In fact they could have made the tray manual with no power and a handle to slide it in and out , and it would last just as long and maybe longer.

It's like the in-dash DVD screens in the car. Some are manual and some are electronic. Some you have to pull out by yourself and tilt them up and some do it automatically. But they all have the same parts. The electronic one just includes a motor to turn the gears .

    Well that's my observation anyway.

This would probably be the easiest way. http://www.ps2cover.com/index.html

I have a modchip but my friend didn't want to solder so he got this. It basically replaces the top of your playstation 2 with a flip top lid. Then you just put in the boot disc that comes with it and when it tells you to put in the game just pop the lid, swap, and hit X. Pretty simple and works really good.

jonjandran, thanks for the info. I've always heard that it's really bad for the drive, but maybe that's just one of those myths that someone just invented and it's still being passed around.

Here is a link to the PS2 Slide Card:
    http://www.success-hk.com/welcome/ps...s/ps2-tool.htm

One problem though ... I see on all of the "swapping tricks" that PSX games are not supported, only PS2 games. Since Thrill Kill is a PSX game, that solution won't work.

Get the Swap Magic discs and the lid. You'll be able to boot PS2 games with Swap Magic. Then get just about any cheap, recent PS1 Game Shark or Action Replay. Those will let you boot PS1 imports with mostly the same procedure.

That link seems to indicate that the lid is not necessary:

    Instructions for PS2 CD-R backups

Boot up the Swap Magic 2 "CD" disk.
Wait for the PS2 to boot up until "Load Program" message appears on the screen.
Now hold the "Eject" button until the power indicator turns from green to orange.
The CD tray will open, Change the Swap Magic 2 disk with your PS2 CD game disk.
The CD tray will close within 5-10 seconds.
After the CD tray closes press "X" on your controller.
Your PS2 backup will now load.
    Instructions for PS2 DVD-R backups

Boot up the Swap Magic 2 "DVD" disk.
Wait for the PS2 to boot up until "Insert Disc" message appears on the screen.
So, is that top-opening case necessary or not? Will the Swap Magic
PS2 Boot Disc be all you need? It only mentions backups in those instructions...do imports work with it? If you have the Disc, is the slide card still necessary?

    Thanks!

Those instructions are for using Swap Magic with a no-solder "mod chip" that opens the tray without the PS2 actually knowing it.

You will need at least one of these:
    1. Knife swap or slide card
    2. Flip-top replacement lid
    3. No-solder ejector mod
    4. Just remove the top of your PS2 entirely ;-)

Also, Swap Magic will work with import originals as well as backups. If it's a DVD or DVD-R, use the Swap Magic DVD. If it's a CD or CD-R, use the CD. Yes, you get both of them in the set.

Ahh, ok. Thanks davidbrit2. I noticed that link there seels the disc with the card, but the no-solder mnod chip isn't at that link. Any idea who sells that chip?

    Thanks again. :-)

I'm sorry I forgot about this, but to use the swap magic disks to boot a ps1 game you need to have a gameshark 2.

My opinion, the best way is to get a Japanese PS2. This is coming from a guy who modded (and then unmodded) his own PS2 and repairs multiple PS@'s a week.

Take a touchy console to begin with, and then solder in 20+ tiny points that were not meant to be wired to.... bzzzzt. It works, but I don't thionk much of it. At least with my level of soldering skills. Too risky.

(there are admittedly many with soldering skills that outstip mine)

I'd say a Japanese PS2 beats a mod chip, but when Swap Magic, a $5 Game Shark, and the replacement lid are only a fraction of the cost, that seems like a clear winner to me. There are VERY few PS2 games that won't work with Swap Magic. Like less than 10, I believe.

Well, I just ordered a no-solder mod chip for my V7 machine and Swap Magic. I'd love a Japanese Ps2, but with more than 40 consoles in my room already, I just have no space. :-)

Thanks so much, guys, you've answered my questions where no one else could!! Very much appreciated! I promise drinks are on me if we meet up. :-)

Good luck with that. If you run into trouble, just bump the thread. Heh.

    Correction!

You purchased a stolen pirated copy of a game, not a legit import.

Let us know how the solderless chip works in terms of functionality and ease of installation. Inquiring minds want to know.

And jjessop is right, there are no legal copies of Thrill Kill. A Japanese PSX won't help you there.
