    Default Defender Arcade Button Layout?

I was about to send the "Top 20 shmups" thread spinning further OT, when my cooler head prevailed.

    *I LIVE*

Yeah, Sinistar shows me for the running coward I am. Only the Ghost (Haunted House, Atari 2600) has instilled the same level of pure panic.

But now to the point of this post--it was mentioned that Defender, however, imposing, is masterable, which indeed must be the case if people can play it for hours straight (even days!). So now I am inspired to set up my Shadowblade stick with a reasonable facsimile of the arcade control setup so that if I *do* ever develop the skillz they will be somewhat transferable to an arcade cabinet. Just in case I run into one, you know. But the memory has dimmed. So where do I get a picture of a Defender arcade cab showing the controls in good detail, or else a diagram of the control setup?

    From left to right:
    Joystick (Up/Down)
    Reverse
    Player 1 start
    Hyperspace
    Player 2 start
    Smart Bomb
    Thrust
    Fire

Cool deal on mastering Defender! Like you said, in the 80's you had many many folks everywhere scoring literally in the millions So it's definitely doable and (imho) rewarding task!

By the way, here are some great articles too you might find interesting.

"SURVIVING FREE SPACE". EXCELLENT hints on surviving free space:

(6 pages total: just substitute 43, 44, 45, or 46 at the end of the url for each page)

Here's the rest of the scans for the article I took the above picture from. Pretty fun reading where the author talks about how you have to "spend a lot of money" to get good at Defender, but how it's worth it.

Thanks, NE1--just what the doctor ordered! I had forgotten that you handle reverse with the left thumb. I guess I'll just have to make a concession and map it to the right hand, as none of my PSX sticks have a button conveniently located hard by the stick proper. Yeah, I definitely struggle to make it to wave 5. But just wait--I'll show those stinking rotton baiters!
