Default When will they be considered NOT video games?

I got a DS today, and am definatly enjoying it. But while playing Feel the magic, I realized something. The DS isn't a normal video game system. Then it dawned on me the same goes for the PS2 Katana, or even DDR. The video games are just assistants. How much longer till there is no video game? Or what do you consider not a 'true' video game? Soon all games will be hands on, and half of the game will be done physically, not just with your thumbs. :/ I don't know if this is going to be a good or bad thing.
Somebody make me a "CGE 2k7 Attendee banner" so I don't have to use this lame text

what the hell are you talking about,

just because you interact with a different device doesnt mean its not a video game. its a Video. Game. in the truest sense of the words.

    See??

Isn't it great that you're a member of a retro gaming forum? If the new stuff gets you down, you can always crawl back to the classics!!!

Stuffing coins into a slot machine and pulling the handle is technically still "playing a game". You're still making decisions and interacting.

as long as there is a picture on some sort of monitor or screen and you make decisions on this picture with some sort of input device it will be a video game

It's true, I've seen it done a few weeks ago, its the gameboy version though so you will have to deal with the green screen.

But as long as its a game on a screen, its a video game.

Physical or non-physical, though, I'm still waiting for the titles to be called videogames, no space. Steven Kent talks about the reason for videogame over "video game" in Trigger Happy: it defines the genre as a unique and novel interactive experience, rather than as a board game with pictures. That is, there are many videogames which you wouldn't necessarily consider games - they're story-based, or moral-based (witness the annual Serious Games conference). Similar reasoning explained the shift from "motion picture" to movie/film. It's tough to broaden videogame popularity when the genre is thought of as "merely games."

That's true. Some projects like Second Life or Wild Divine, while technically games, are also more than that. The Second Life software, for example, could certainly be used as a communication tool or simply a tool for creative expression.

Also, consider driving/flight simulators. Not the kind you play on your PS2, the big ones that are actually used for training people. While not considered video games, they have a lot in common with them.

My own personal opinion is that anything can be a game if you find it entertaining.

They're always going to be video games.

Whether it's a joystick, a touch screen, or sensors that read synaptic impulses from your brain, all the peripherals in the world isn't going to deter from the fact that you're using some kind of visual signal to take part in a game.
