Yes, indeed. 5 mil units moved in a little over a week. I'm actually impressed, considering there was a severe lack of launch software support.

actually it said 5 million units by the end of Nintendo's fiscal year, which ends march 31st. still an impressive number.

i think it's safe to say the DS is no VB.

Hmm. When 5 million have been sold, rather than projected to have been sent to retailers by the end of the financial year, that might actually mean something.

still, the only reason they increased their projection numbers is because they are selling so well. i'm sure they won't be too far off the mark with their figures.

According to this site, approximately 770,000 Virtual Boy units were sold worldwide. That's nothing!

If 5 million DS units are sold by March 31st, then I would say that's a pretty good start considering the weak launch games. We've got Metroid, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, and Wario Ware among others to look forward to next year, and those games should help sales as well.

I don't think this is an N-Gage situation. Ninty don't really need to massage the figures by shouting about shipping and not declaring actaul sales. If the current shortage is any indication they have already sold millions of units and the Gamespot article stated that there are 2 million preorders in Japan. That is pretty impressive which ever way you look at it - that's pretty close to home console figures!

I think things are going to get really interesting once the PSP launches...

wow. I've heard about the 2 million preorders in Japan. I know the launch went ok in America too. I wonder what kind of numbers Sony will put up with the PSP. I get the feeling that it won't be able to match the initial DS numbers. Time will tell! Maybe Nintendo should just leave the home market and just make portable systems. The handheld market has held pretty strong for Nintendo while the home console market has dried up a little more with each successive generation. I dig Nintendo and all, but in many ways the DS being successful seems like a kind of hollow victory b/c of the underperformance of the Gamecube. Know what I mean?

I think the big N should stay in the home market as long as it's still profitable - which they say it is. Narrowing your market also narrows your profile and no company wants that.

    BTW - RCM nice avatar!
