Default Anyone know what the point of the ps2 memorycard exploit is?

Alright, I've got a fliptop/swapdisc ps2 that is acting up on me. I've been reading around about stuff, and I've heard speak of a "memory card exploit" that boots code from your memory card. The only thing I know is that it requires a ps2 that can read burns or such to get it on there to begin with. I have that covered, by my quesion is, WHY would you do it? What is the benefit? I have yet to hear a WHY you would want it, only how to do it. Does it allow for a memory card-based portable modchip basically? Or is it just to load that HDload software without a disc? I'm terriblly confused here and am getting tired of wading through (and signing up for) crappy spam ps2 sites to figure this out.

Obviously, if this is a subject not welcomed, nuke the thread.

no, it is ok, as we are not describing how to do it, just how it works and how.

The ps2 exploit, works this way:
In the memcard, there is a file wich gets read everytime you insert a ps1 game, and this file has a pointer to somewhere. When you change that pointer it makes an error comparable to the gc's Phantasy star online bug, wich let's you run arbitrary code on the system. If you run any code on the system, then the system is at your mercy.

It let's you play imported ps1 and ps2 games if done correctly, as a media player from the memcard.

Ok, so I can use my modded-but-kinda-messed-up box to set up said exploit, then use it on a virgin system to load imports? What about backups? Is it still gonna need a swap disc, etc? (take this to PMs if i ask something out of the scope here, I'm not asking for how tos, just clarification really)

By fliptop i mean that it is a PS2 with a fliptop case installed. it's a first-run model, it amazing it works as well as it does. So far no PStwos have entered into this, sorry for the confusion.

Can you verify this? As far as I've found it only works with PS1 games.

There are several programs that can be launched by the exploit HOWEVER it doesn't allow booting of backups!!!!!
It can allow the booting of Magicswap and therefore boot backups by the old slidecard or fliptop method but the exploit itself does not boot backups. The exploit can also be used to boot varios .ELF files including emulators/demos/utilities etc.

If the exploit could load backups then you would find people selling PS1 memory cards with exploit saves already on them alongside Swapdiscs/modchips etc....................

    I understand now

I assumed you meant it was one of the redesigned models that was introduced recently with a flip top lid.
