Bought a Virtua Fighter 32X when they were clearing out in Wal-Mart for $1.99 in 1996. Eleven years later I finally got a system. Good port, better than the Saturn version.

"Enduro" is a symbolic journey through life via the media of a race.
Picked up Panzer Dragoon Orta, Doom 3 and I think DOA 3 a couple weeks before I bought an Xbox, about 1 1/2 years ago..
I got trickstyle on 9/9/99.
Since my birthday is 10/8, may parents actually got me a system from 9/9/99, but I didn't have it yet, so I did buy Trickstyle for DC before I had a DC
Kind of the opposite here but when i first got my n64 i didnt have a game for it for awhile. I remember being so excited to have it anyway that i would just play with the controller imagining how much it would rock when i finally got a game for it lol.
For lucky best wash, use Mr. Sparkle.

I actually found a couple of 3do games a long time ago (i think around 1996 or so) before actually getting a 3DO off of ebay in 2004.
SF 2 Turbo (great port), Samurai showdown, and DOOM (yuck, worst console port hands down)
I recently bought Superman for the Nintendo 64. I heard it was friggin' SWEET! I can't wait to get a system so I can get some gaming on!
In other news, back in the day I got both Hex and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron for my birthday (Nov. 26th) from my grandfather in the mail... Turns out my mom had gotten my an N64 for Christmas that year. I flipped out so severely from excitement that she let me open it christmas eve night.
Rogue Squadron- one of my favorite titles back in the day
Hex- try every day to remember to forget this one
Earning XP since 1986

I traded for a few Dreamcast games before I actually owned a Dreamcast.

I kinda did the opposite of this? I have a bunch of TurboGrafx games, and a PC Engine game or two, but no system to play them on. I had one when I bought the games, but I got rid of the system. Have been waiting around on a deal on a modded TurboDuo or PC Engine Duo for a while now, so the games collect dust.
I have alot of Genny Carts that are in my room and my genesis is at mailboxes etc in plattsburgh
I asked for Sonic Mega Collection for GameCube as soon as it came out, even though I didn't have the system. I saw it in Nintendo Power and was overjoyed to see this all in one disc. My grandma bought it for me since she knew I always liked those games and she trusted that I would probably buy the system as it was a Nintendo product. I got the game on Christmas.
I couldn't hold back for long though, and bought my GameCube as soon as possible with my Christmas money that year. Being a fan of the old Sonic games I enjoyed hours just looking at all the extra content and replaying those classics.
Then my stepdad got me Oddworld: Munch's Odyssey for Xbox at one point because I liked the Playstation Oddworld games. Finding out that Oddworld was moved to the rival system, I just had to buy that $60 pawned Xbox to play it. Back then that was a good price for the system.
Another one was Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for Game Boy Color. I had fun looking at the instruction booklet before deciding to get a Game Boy Advance at the time instead of a Game Boy Color because the GBA could play GBC games anyway. I think at the time I had thought the Super Game Boy would have played GBC games though, which was wrong. It mainly appealed to me because I had SMB1 for NES, but never had a box or instructions.
When I got my first Atari 2600 lot for free from my stepdad, he had a loose Donkey Kong for Colecovision in there which I couldn't play. That one was just sold because when I was in 4th grade, I had no idea what a Colecovision was. I was probably lucky to get to experience that Atari because I grew up in the 16 bit era. But unlike some people my age I loved it.
The last example of having a game before a system is an import example. I imported Mr. Nutz for Sega Mega Drive because I liked the emulated rom, not knowing that PAL Mega Drive games don't work on NTSC systems. So I hunted down the US SNES version as well.
I bought halo 3 (legendary edition) before getting my X360... I tought these will go off in the same day but I still see it in stores for half the price I paid.... I got screwed up!
I also have 3 a 3DO game and some 32X games but no systems!
Every once and a while I will buy a game for a system I don't have if I know it is rare or worth money or if I am going to want it later.
Examples:
I found Crazy Climber in a local used video game store before I had a 2600. I knew that it was a rare title and only set me back two bucks.
I don't have a PS3 yet, but went ahead and bought a copy of Disgaea 3 and a strategy guide. I know I will get around to getting a PS3 eventually and it might be hard to find later.
I found a cheap copy of Mutant League Football before I could find a cheap Genesis.
I bought Venture for the ColecoVision at a flea market for fifty cents. I don't have a ColecoVision, but it is one of my favorite old games to play on emulators and I will probably find one some day.
Occasionally I will buy a game that I can't play if it is part of a collection unrelated to video games. For example, I have a copy of the Famicom Transformers game even though I don't have a Famicom. I consider it more a part of my Transformers collection instead of part of my video game collection.
I have had 360 games for well over two years and I just got my 360 earlier this month. I also have several DS and Psp games but neither system.

I got my first import PS1 game (incidently my first PS1 overall) before I had a system that could boot it although the time between the actions was quite small. Otherwise I had Jurassic Park Operation Genesis for Xbox before I had Xbox or Xbox 360 with BC although I sold the 360 and game before it ever could have been run. Most recently I got Mother 3 for GBA and I've yet to get a GBA. Not really a big issue either, I got the game more out of respect than to use it.
