In all honesty, I've never played any of the Guilty Gear games. How do they stack up against Capcom's and SNK's brawlers?

Tell me about it!
The last few days I have been playing GGX for PS2 and GG for WSC.Can't wait for X2!
Kwaj, Guilty Gear is closer to the Darkstalkers series or a speedier Samurai Showdown; think flashy, cartoonish fighting with a fast, aggressive style. The games also favor preset button flailing more than competitive Capcom or SNK fighters, but in my opinion, they're far more satisfying than those highly-balanced titles.
What's more, Guilty Gear is just crazy-stupid fun. One of the new characters for X-2 is a leather-clad guitar goddess who wears what looks like an evil, shades-wearing version of the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter. The returning cast includes a pirate girl who attacks with an anchor as big as she is, a scalpel-wielding doctor with a bag over his head, and a woman who forms her huge length of blond hair into wings, daggers, and a hand, depending on the move you pull off. It's great stuff.
Also you can't forget about the high rez 2D graphics in GGX (at least on the DC version)
Assuming that doesn't change for X-2 it should look absolutely amazing, much like X.
Gameplay wise it's fun, but I don't think it has quite the charisma that the FF, SS, KoF, LB, and SF have.
Think Marvel vs Capcom 2 but one on one fighting, and you've got Guilty Gear. Lots of traps, lots of moving around, and it looks nice. My friend has the import of XX, been playing it almost nonstop.
