    Default Screw NES

Is there a way to open NES carts that dosen't involve spending money on a
    custom screwdriver/security bit thinggie?

    A drill.

I'm not kidding. I use the gamebit myself, but the only alternative I know of is a drill. I do not recommend the drill method.

Been there, done that. Not a good thing unless you're scrapping the thing or are very good with the drill.

i heard a guy say once that he took a pen and melted it, then stuck it in the screw hole of an nes cart to got the shape of the screw imprinted into the plastic, then he was able to unscrew a few carts with it.

That could work but you'd need a thin pen for NES games. The common pen you get a dozen for a dollar are big enough for larger security screwsd found on most consoles and most Sega carts but it won't fit the hole on NES cart.

Another tool that could work is the spanner (looks like 2 pointed fork, commonly found in a $10 security bit kit at most hardware stores). You'd probably need to use a small hand grinder (like Dremel) to adjust the width of the space so it'd fit the security screw.
Another day, another dollar... wake me when it's payday.

Not to undercut SW, but I actually got an entire set, with a screwdriver and about 25 bits, with everything from philips and flathead to NES bits, and the nasty little tri-screw bit things, for about 16 dollars. I think you can find them on the bay, some guy was selling about 50 of them on a BIN when I bought mine.

Thats exactly what I did but getting the screws back in is imposible with this
method, you end up with a woobley case. I might fork out for a bit set at
the local hardware store when I can afford it

Oh and it's the "inside" part of the pen

You can get Nintendo Securebits at your local hardware store?

I haven't checked yet, but I'll take a lose screw and a cart with me to check.
Anything even remotely close that will do the trick will do.
