Default PS2 sold over 100 million units!

Dont know if this is old news, just read it in a online newspaper here. Anyway, 100 million PS2 machines in like 6 years is over 45000 PS2s sold every day.

    22.22 millions sold in Asia
40.65 millions sold in North America
    37.14 millions sold in Europe

Over 6200 PS2 titles to choose from too.
    Congrats Sony!

That is... insane! 45,000 PlayStation 2s sold every friggin' day?! Just incredible. Has the Xbox even sold 45,000 in Japan since its launch?!

As for the number of games... 6,200 games.. just "wow". I am glad I don't collect for this console I own something like sixty games... oh well, just another 6,140 odd to go...

I have a funny feeling the games included every region added together multiple copy wise (so something released in all three regions is counting as three games here). Even the PS1 only managed about 1200-1500 games per region.

Ye, that might be. I thought 6200 games in 6 years sounded like alot, but I guess its possible. Doesnt PSX have like 10000 games?

    Impressive.....most impressive

I think this generation Playstation has more life left in it for a number of reasons, heres a couple:

A lot of both casual and avid gamers are not impressed with the slight Improvement in graphic quality with the first Next-gen system thus far (especially casuals) and are very content with thier current machines.

Also; IMO there are going to be FAR FEWER EARLY ADAPTERS WITH THE NEXT GENERATION OF CONSOLES and there will be no rush to next gen the way their was when the Playstation 2 was released therefore the adaptation process will be MUCH slower in comparison with previous current gen to next gen.

Another is that the current PS2 ALREADY PLAYS DVD AND MOST OF THE DISC FORMATS that both the 360 and PS3 will play (sure the PS3 will have blue ray) but my point is that the uneducated masses that actually make or break a console for better or worse just isnt very interested in yet another disc format -no matter how much the tech geeks get off on the stuff it just doesnt matter to the mass of casual gamers or movie buffs.

Overall I see this generation of consoles, specifically the PS2, lasting much longer than any other before it.

Dont get me wrong Im not downing the Xbox 1 or Gamecbue but we have had enough threads on the fate of those two systems already so I wont waste anyones time with that.

    just to make this clear:

it is 100 Mio units SHIPPED, not sold, i'd say ~10 mio of those are still stock and another ~10 mio were replacement units (yes, they count those). Still an impressive number, but the 100 is not sales!!

Another question is, when a unit is returned defective, then SONY "refurbishes" it. Does the refurbished unit count as another unit, or does it just replace the old unit in terms of total quantity shipped?

If it counts as another unit, a HIGH percent of that 100 million are refurbs :P

Wow! Then by my calculations... nearly half a million different people have purchased PS2s!

Default The reason why Sony is in no hurry

This is the reason why Sony is in no hurry to get into the next gen market. The reason why they are #1 is that the company has a wide range of users including the "Billy Joe Bobs" of the world that only care about the newest incarnation of Deer Hunter. Not everyone is online with their console playing multiplayer. Not everyone gives a shit about the prettiest graphics, let alone innovative title. Heck if you were to ask me what is the #1 question I have been asked recently at a game store it would be "Is there a casino game"? I think a current example is that Xbox live I think just surpassed 2 to 3 million mark in comparasion. If over 40 million just in the States alone have bought a PS2, then playing multiplayer over the net on your console has just scratched the surface of gamers. Nobody can deny that the PS2 owned the competition in sales.

PlayStation 2 is strongly supported by a wide range of users as well as from third party developers and publishers, and by maintaining backward compatibility of software titles for its predecessor system for the first time in the history of computer entertainment...

I've bought three PS2s by myself. A launch, the revision that added DVD-R support etc. and the slim.

Simply put maybe worldwide and for every release. The US only got +/-1300 Commercial releases, not counting demos or The Lightspan games (educational games made for school and not released to the general public). Its said that Japan easily had close to double that and the Europes numbers are close to the US in actual releases.

As of right now (not counting GH or other re-releases) the US is looking at just about 1200 PS2 games.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

I bet at least a third of those are replacements for broken PS2s.
