Default Anyone work at Gamestop/ Funco/ ect....

Just wondering what your opion was of people that try to buy trade in from customers while there at the counter?
I was in Funcoland the other day and someone was trading in a box full of Genesis and 32x games, I was going to offer the guy money for it, but thought it wrong to do while the sales people were helping him.
Does anyone do this? Do you wait till you hear offering price from store and offer a bit more?
    Opions please.

I wanted to do this after GS refused to buy this one guys 5 or so Xbox games. They had huge yellow stickers on the boxes that said "MicroSoft Employee Demo" and he explained that he could buy them from microsoft where he worked for cheap. i don't know a think about the X-box, but he was rather on the run sorta, i wanted to chase him down and offer some cash but i didn't know what to do other than yell across the store.
My life and perception has changed, but my principals are the same.

It's sometimes frowned upon by employees, I know I hated it, because that was most likely one less thing that I would buy in and buy from Funco later.

The respectable thing to do, is approach them quietly (don't yell, cause you might get shitty service later if an employee over hears) Take it out of the store, or you'll most likely be booted out if you tried to do a cash-for-item transaction in the store.

I work at a mom and pop game store and if someone tries to do that in my store they are kicked out. Most of the time they dont come back cuz they are pissed off, but if they do come back everything is cool unless they do it again then I let them know never to step foot in my fucking store again or they will be escorted out head first into the parking lot.

Even at funco I wouldnt do that if someone brought stuff in unless it was like a stadium events then fuck it Dont need to go back to that store that bad.

A customer who says it out loud like hey man Ill give ya 5 bucks more than them for that is gonna piss me off but just set him straight.

A customer acting sneaky and covert doing it enrages me because they know they arent supposed to do that and thats gonna get them on my shit list real fast.

I ALWAYS see the sneaky ones they arent slick at all and they give themselves away because of certain mannerisms. its almost like pinpointing a shoplifter sometimes in the similarities they show.

The way I see it the store has to pay whatever 2 grand a month or something rent and also pay alot of other bills to be there where as a person walking off the street taking a buy back from the store didnt pay anything and doesnt have the right. Or something like that. You gotta put yourself in the shoes of the person paying the bills and imagine some asshole waltzing in and undercutting you.

True, but do you think most people who just want the game/system really give a damn, personally I have more consideration for people than that, but most don't. :/

I'm gonna stand outside Sothy's store and just buy everything and anything that people bring there to sell.

Then resell on ebay at extremely inflated prices.

Best thing that I have found to do is the following:

Once GameStop employee says: "Sorry, we aren't taking _____ anymore"

you say: "I would be interested in _____. Can we talk about it outside the store?"

That way it is not on GameStops property and I doubt that anyone involved would care that you did it. That is the method recommended to me by people in managerial positions at GameStops I visit.

    Hope that helps a bit!

Actually, the above example would be moot in this case, since the store already rejected the offer to sell, thus making the item fair game. I think what the discussion is about is when the clerk says "I will give you $5 for it", and then you say, "I will give you $6 for it." THAT is what is at issue here... Perhaps what can be done is perhaps after the prospective seller rejects the store's offer, then you can step in...

To my knowledge it is against GameStop policy to conduct a personal sale on store property. So in theory the clerk offering cash for the item would be in the wrong in the first place so by all means make a counter offer right in front of him. I know they were a bit more strict in the pre-Barns-n-Noble days.

As far as your comment goes, MarkM2112, I am not sure I follow completely. Most GameStops don't take in Genny stuff in on trade and I know of none that take 32X (in reference to the original question by dan2357). So I assume he is talking about making an offer for items that GameStops do not take back to begin with.

I would only make an offer if the store rejected the items. If they accept the games I would ask the clerk when they would become available to buy. If it's like a gold NWC I would say "I'll give you 5 dollars more then they are offering" just because it's something I probably would never get a chance to buy ever again. I can live with being banned for an item like that.
