any cambridge soundworks system can be recommended

what gaming do u mean? if u mean playing emulators or such things, speakers from cambridge soundworks/creative are a good choice.

if u want to play mp-3d-shooters like cs, ut, q3 and so on GO AND BUY a Plantronics DSP 500 Headset, it has 3d sound chip included in the cable and it's just the best. if u already have a good soundcard (and i mean really good, like sb audigy 1/2) buy another Plantronics Headset, there is one exactly like the dsp500 but without soundchip (dsp500 is an usb device)

Under $250 you're going to be hard pressed. Go to bestbuy and look for one of their surround sound starter systems. TRY and get a Sony. You might have to go up to $300-$350 though.

if you forget surround sound and a subwoofer you can get a decent 2 channel pair of speakers. if you buy a 5.1 or stereo + sub then you are much more likely to get very poor performance.
plus youll get better performance for listening to music.
    5.1 speakers are overrated.

at that price point i would go with what a previous poster said and get a very comfortable pair of high quality headphones.
