    Default Gamecube DRE

My friend keeps getting a disk read error on his Gamecube. We had to boot up a brand new game several times before it decided to work.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Never heard of this on the GC..until now. Clean the lens, with small amount of 50/50 distelled water and alcohol and a qitip, then compressed air the whole laser assembly. If it;s really dusty, you may need to cleam again.

If it's a dirt problem, not only the lens needs to be clean, but the mirror that reads the laser. It is under the laser assembly.

Good Luck, and post your results. This a new one to me.

It's happened but it's rare and usually as a result of scratched disk or dust buildup. If cleaning the lens doesn't work and the disk has no sratch (ie brand new) then you may want to try Nintendo. They have 1 year warranty on GC.

Sorry I didn't read this before. WS, if this is happening on all of his games, call Nintendo right now. ESPECIALLY if his system has ever acted as if there is no game at all in the system even if there is. Whenever I run into this issue on the phone (I work at Nintendo) I always just extend the warranty if it's out, and get the system fixed for free.

The trick is to NOT ASK for a free warranty extension or act like you deserve to have the gamecube fixed for free. And don't lie about when you got it, either. Nintendo has a method for verifying when and which chain (not specifically which store or state) a gamecube was purchased in, so it's very likely that you don't even need the receipt to have it repaired. Keep in mind that this is just what I do, so I can't guarantee that if the GC is out of warranty they will extend it, but if they don't, ask me again and I'll see if there's a way I can help you out.

BTW, @CrazyImpmon: This type of problem can actually be related to the system itself, and have nothing to do with the cleanliness of the discs, however the discs can simulate the problem that I think WS is having, which is a much more serious issue.

@Fluke: He called up like you suggested, and they offered to extend the warranty, like you suggested. They even paid shipping for him to send it back. He hasn't gotten it back yet, so it's still in the mail somewhere, but he wanted to thank you anyway.

So, a big "thank you" to you, from "YourMother" of torchthebridge.com "fame".
